Review

Wow! What an experience! I just got back from the BBFF show in Oceanside, and it was blow away!! I'll start from the beginning. I got there at about 5:30, an hour and a half before the gates opened. I was one of the first 25 or so people in line. While waiting I heard them rehearse Dance Dance Dance & Do You Wanna Dance & I Can Hear Music. Once in, I walked briskly (I wasn't allowed to run) to the front. Annoyingly, the middle front section was reserved for a group called "The Crest Club". So I took the seat in the front row on the left side, closest to the middle. While waiting, the woman next to me was talking to her husband, saying, "I saw him...I saw Brian Cooke in the audience!" (She meant Brian Wilson--and no, he wasn't really there.) Later, a man behind me said, "I think that's Al Jardine up there on stage" when it was really the DJ that was going to introduce the group. Funny. Then he introduced the opening act, Diamond In The Rough. They were OK, they just played WAY too long. By the 9th or 10th song, a few people in the back were screaming "Beach Boys!!"

So the show starts, and the group gets on stage. From left to right, was Matt Jardine, Wendy Wilson, Al Jardine, Carnie Wilson, Adam Jardine, and Owen Elliott. This was Owen's first show since her recent maternity leave; she just recently had her child. The first songs were Dance Dance Dance & Do You Wanna Dance, done in the traditional medley style. Matt really had Bruce's rendition of DYWD down! Listening to the tape, it sounds like Bruce! Next up was Do It Again, and Matt imitates Mike's lead vocal, and, I think, makes it a point to sound extra nasal-sounding on the line "and the beach was the place to gooo..". He looks at Al and laughs after that line. Meanwhile, the audience is dancing in their seats, but I want to get up and dance.

Next up is "Darlin". I think Carnie notices that I know the lyrics to this song (I sang along with every song during the concert). Carnie does a great lead, and they do the acapella ending. Al introduces the vocalists, but not the band (yet). Carnie announces that Marilyn Wilson and Diane Rovell are going to join them for the next song, and sure enough there they are! "I Can Hear Music" sounds great; they used this as their first song at the LA concert back in December which I was fortunate enough to attend.

Next Al introduces "Come Go With Me". He seems a lot more comfortable as the host of the show than he did back in December. As I sing the background "never-never-never" part, Wendy notices that I'm singing that, and we make eye contact several times. Carnie then introduces "Surfer Girl", which sounds beautiful, then Wendy and Matt take turns on "Don't Worry Baby". Al comments that the Wilson sisters contribute a lot to the group, and the crowd goes wild. Next, Al says that "we're going to do something a little bit tacky" and introduces the car songs, "Little Deuce Coupe" and "I Get Around". After that the crowd is going crazy, and as Wendy is introducing "In My Room" she gets a little upset when someone starts screaming out song titles. Next was Adam with "Girl Don't Tell Me" and Al with "You're So Good To Me". If you were at the concert, you probably saw me: I was the only one in the audience besides Jonah & Justyn Wilson that was dancing to this one. I was wearing the gold tank top. "You Still Believe In Me" and "God Only knows" were beautiful. I danced to "Sloop John B" alone again, then everyone got up for Wouldn't it be Nice. During "Good Vibrations" a drunken man got up in front of the audience and danced in the spotlight, much to the group's amusement. He was kicked out only to return later on stage and he tried to sing with Carnie but was soon booted. Matt commented after GV that we should all come up to the front like the guy did. At first noone went up because security didn't let them, but they couldn't stop them. I sprinted to the front and got to stand RIGHT UP IN FRONT OF THE STAGE RIGHT BETWEEN AL & CARNIE!!!! They were doing "Heroes & Villains" and everyone was rocking out. Al noticed I was singing the lyrics and gave me an acknowledging smile. Then came "Help Me Rhonda". During the "Help me Rhonda YEAH" parts Al let 3 different people sing into the microphone. I GOT TO SING DIRECTLY INTO AL'S MICROPHONE!!!! Then came "Catch A Wave" and "Hawaii" and "Surfin USA". Adam did the lead to Catch A Wave, and noticed me singing along. After Surfin' USA, the band left the stage, and Carnie reached out and shook my hand, and mouthed "Nice to meet you" at the same time I did!

Then they came out and did "Barbara Ann " & "Fun Fun Fun" and that was it. While trying to find the band, I noticed Billy Hinsche walking by himself. Once I found a gap in the gate, I slipped in and introduced myself. He was very friendly and talked about being tired from the trip from their previous day's concert in Alaska. He signed my poster from the December concert. He told me where the group was and where a good spot was to wait for them. As I went over there, a security guard told me to go away, but a man came up to me as I was rolling up my poster, and asked me if I wanted it autographed. I said yes, and he said to give it to him, and I said no. I thought he was trying to steal it. He explained that he was the BBFF lawyer and that he would get it autographed and I said OK. As I was waiting for him to come out, a security guard came out and said "Are you Eric?" (I had told the lawyer my name). He said, "Where's the poster?" and Carnie came out with a pen wanting to sign it!! We talked and she signed my second copy of the poster. I told her about my website and said she was on the internet all the time and would visit; I gave her the address. She also commented that the band had improved a lot since the December show. A few other fans gathered around and got autographs. I busted out the camera and me and Carnie took a picture. Later, after much waiting for the rest of the band, and after watching several people sneak in and meet up with the band, I met Adam Jardine as he was getting into his car. He said he appreciated me going to the previous concert and that they would be back. And that was that.

In conclusion, I have even more respect now for this group than I did after the last concert. You can lambaste them all you want for "selling out" the setlist, but the show did have a MUCH more sincere feel than the Beach Boys touring group. By the way, I was able to get a copy of the setlist that was taped to the floor from one of the security guards. It had "Kokomo" with a big line through it, indicating that they had probably intended to perform it, but decided not to.
