Hot night... State Fair-style show (75min.)...
HAWAII - a real treat with smooth lead by Al... crowd on their feet...
I CAN HEAR MUSIC - surprise appearance by Honeys Marilyn, Diane & Ginger for shimmering lead vocals augmented by Wendy Wilson and Owen Elliott.
COME GO WITH ME - very lush vocals & great sax solo - sounds very much like the record these days...
DON'T WORRY BABY - delightful alternating leads by Wendy and Matt singing to each other... almost a movie musical kind of feel ala West Side Story.
GIRL DON'T TELL ME - a real highlight, with crowd-pleasing, Beatle-esque guitar solo in the break...
YOU'RE SO GOOD TO ME - featuring Alan on lead guitar - playing the intro and instrumental break.
GOD ONLY KNOWS - multi-layered vocals
WOULDN'T IT BE NICE - Matt providing additional Tympany lines near the end...
GOOD VIBRATIONS - stunning live version - best I've heard in years, with echoing surf guitar licks, church organ and eerie 60s-style theremin... this is how this song is SUPPOSED to sound live.
SAIL ON SAILOR - a real surprise - introed by Alan as a classic from the HOLLAND LP - featuring the band who "played on the original record." Billy Hinsche (for the first time since the 1977 tour) alternating lead vocals with Bobby Figueroa.
KOKOMO - almost a send up of the Mike Love "Beach Boys" show... done very tongue-in-cheek, with Al replacing his guitar with a hand mike and dancing along with Wendy and Owen...
HELP ME RHONDA - an extended keyboard solo from Billy Hinsche
SURFIN USA/BARBARA ANN/FUN FUN FUN The Honeys return for the last two songs... audience hysteria is at a fever pitch... everyone standing... the audience singing is almost louder than the band... house lights up and out...
General observations:
Probably the tightest band since the 80s (small wonder, with the present talent lineup on stage... this ain't Mike Love and the Bel Air Bandits)... incredibly precise vocals and instrumentation... no medleys... Al fitting in quite nicely as band leader/front man (aka "Big Daddy" as he's called on stage). With Al, Matt & Adam's voices so similar (yes - Adam does sound like his father circa 1965) - the vocals have a unique bathed-in-the-same gene pool sound not heard since Carl, Brian and Dennis shared the stage. I'm sure audiences hear the same effect with Wendy and Carnie... unfortunately, Carnie was not present at the show.
Well rehearsed, relaxed, the BBF&F seem to be having as much fun as their audience. And the audience was having a ball.
