Beach Boys Concert--September 24, 1971

Carnegie Hall, New York City
September 24, 1971

One of two shows played on this particular day. C-Man writes: "The Boys' triumphant return to Carnegie Hall, scene of their victorious February "come-back". They played two shows this night, at 7:30 and 11:00. Unsure which show this setlist is from. The list of backup personnel above is directly from the concert program, reproduced in Billboard's July 24, 1976 Beach Boys special insert, with the exception of Billy Hinsche...he's not listed in the program, but years later, in an interview with BBFUN, Billy mentioned that this was his first show with the Boys, playing glockenspiel and tambourine with Ricky Fataar. These shows marked the concert debut of the "Surf's Up" album, and also a rare 1971 performance of FEEL FLOWS, which was then dropped until 1974. Dennis sings an incredible version of BARBARA, with an extra verse not found in the officially-released "Endless Harmony" version. After SURF'S UP, someone in the audience yells "Where's Brian?" Dennis responds, "Brian's in the song", and Carl adds, "Good answer". Also, another rareity - Mike Love recites a poem on Transcendental Meditation. "

Ben Winkler writes: "I was at the 9/24/71 11:00 p.m. show at Carnegie Hall. I believe yoursetlist is from the early show, as I don't remember "Feel Flows." It also might be that there were no more encores for the early show, as the time was limited for the 1st audience to vacant and the 2nd audience to enter and get seated. The concert itself was probably the best Beach Boy show I ever saw, out of about 20. The small hall, the excellent acoustics, an audience very savvy on their post-Pet Sounds material, the horn section, new songs and a performance of 'Surf's Up' -- incredible! They were called back for 3 encores. Finally, when the crowd wouldn't leave, they had to come back without their instruments, to bid us a final good night."

-Encore-
20. DO IT AGAIN

About the encore, C-Man writes: "The tape ends after the first song in the encore, but it's very likely they did a few other tunes, including HELP ME RHONDA, since Bruce promised earlier in the show that they would do that one, and also since it's in the encore of several other late 1971 shows."

Update: Barry Piatoff, who attended this concert, recalls that there were five additional songs in the encore, including "Little Deuce Coupe", "Help Me Rhonda", and "Johnny B. Goode", and two others. (Ed: I'm guessing one is "Surfer Girl").
