"The Battle of New Market Heights,
Freedom Will Be Theirs by the Sword."
8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at the
First Presbyterian Church, Richmond, VA., 4602 Cary Street Road, 23226
A parking lot is available behind the church with an entrance off the
parking lot to the left and down a few stairs.
Our speaker for February 14 will be James S. Price, author of
The Battle of New Market Heights, Freedom Will Be Theirs by the Sword.
New Market Heights was part of a larger two-day action known today as
the Battle of Chaffin's Farm, fought on September 29-30, 1864. It took
place during the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign of 1864-65. In late
September of 1864, Grant prepared an offensive to strike at Petersburg,
prevent Robert E. Lee from reinforcing his troops in the Shenandoah
Valley, and - if possible - seize the city of Richmond.
Jimmy's book and his talk will lend new understanding to what was a
relatively unpublicized battle. Jimmy has promised to bring some copies
along for sale.
Jimmy and his family are residents of Fredericksburg where he is an
adjunct professor of military history of the Civil War at Germanna
Community College. He is a contractor with Fredericksburg NPS where he
is developing a web based curriculum for them titled "Community at War."
Be sure to come early to get a good seat.
