MILITANT WOMEN WARN OF CHAOS IF SUPREME COURT DOES NOT DECIDE ON ERAP PROSECUTION SOON
NEWS RELEASE
05 April 2001

"It doesn't matter where the Supreme Court holds its sessions. We will be trailing them to make sure justice is delivered and the gains of People Power II are not reverted." This was the statement of GABRIELA as it joins thousands of others in a caravan to Baguio City today.

Liza Maza, GABRIELA Secretary General said "Estrada's allies in the Supreme Court are employing various tactics to delay Estrada's prosecution as payback for political favors, and possibly millions in balato money."

"In the same manner that we kept close watch on the senate, and blocked the possible railroading of the impeachment trial by pro-Erap senators, let's do the same in the Supreme Court and bring People Power to Baguio."

Maza said "the Supreme Court has taken too long to make a final decision on this issue. They are giving Estrada and his cohorts the luxury of being able to freely roam and campaign, while flaunting their ill-gotten wealth. The most repugnant criminal in this country is living like a king, because the Supreme Court refuses to make that one important decision.”

Maza said the justices should issue a decision before they find yet another convenient excuse in the elections to delay Estrada's prosecution. "If the decision to prosecute Estrada continues to drag and is postponed until after the elections, there will be chaos."

"Expect the Supreme Court to be bombarded with election-related complaints by losing PnM candidates which of course will be conveniently and exhaustively entertained by robed Estrada cronies. Worse, if PnM candidates manage to buy their way through the elections, they will lose no time in using their new positions to bring Estrada back in power."

“Estrada remains active on the campaign trail, unhampered by plunder cases. And the tremendously sluggish manner of the Arroyo administration in pursuing Estrada’s prosecution is causing much distress and dismay among People Power participants, especially voters. If GMA fails to show the political will to prosecute and arrest Estrada, chances are, this administration will lose its 13-0 bid. And justice will prevail not in the Supreme Court, but in the streets once more.” ###
