NO PEOPLE POWER III AND NO SYMPATHY VOTES FOR PnM SENATORIABLES AFTER ESTRADA ARREST
NEWS RELEASE

22 April 2001

"Only three kinds of people will join Miriam Defensor Santiago's call for People Power III and prevent Estrada's arrest-- the corrupt, the cronies, and the confused." This was the statement of BAYAN MUNA Partylist nominee and GABRIELA Secretary General Liza Maza. The militant women's group downplayed senatorial bet Miriam Defensor Santiago's threats of a People Power III should Estrada be jailed next week.

Maza refuted Defensor-Santiago's statement, "on the contrary, people are eagerly anticipating Estrada's arrest. Many will in fact find this event a cause for celebration, it is a sign that the country's justice system is not utterly hopeless. Estrada is charged with an unbailable offense and it is imperative that he is jailed as soon as the warrant for his arrest have been issued."

Maza also said that Estrada's arrest would not translate into sympathy votes for his candidates, including Dra. Loi Ejercito. "It will not even be surprising if Estrada's senatorial bets, especially those implicated in the charges, drastically fall off the surveys after his arrest. Estrada is getting what the law says he should. He is getting what he deserves. Sympathy is given only to those who have been unjustly treated and Estrada is not one of them."

"And while it is expected that the actor in Estrada will be portraying a most miserable and dispirited character by voluntarily surrendering upon arrest voluminous evidences surrounding his case will make him a very ineffective actor. Laos na talaga."

"People Power II, has generated educated and thinking voters who can see through showbiz machinations are turned off by the stench of corruption and foul play. People are now more vigilant, and more cautious, and the names of Estrada supporters, including that of Miriam Defensor Santiago, should be excluded from ballots come election day." ###
