This is going to be your usual song-fic, angsty piece of crap. Yeah, there'll be lots of tears, lots of recriminations. Character death. You know the type. It's based on that song from Armageddon. I heard it and I thought, "Hot damn! This is MSRAngst if I ever heard it!" If you hate, fine, If you don't then hugs and kisses. Disclaimer: How many times do we have to go through this crap? Nobody and nothing belongs to me. I own not one damn thing in this story. So sue me...better yet, don't. I have no money. I have no job with which to pay exorbitant royalties. I'm just borrowing the Ice Queen and Hairdo Boy for a short amount of time. Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Chris Carter, 1013 Productions, Fox and anybody else out there in the universe who thinks I'm making money off of this, let me reassure you, I'M NOT!!!! And without further ado... P.S.: You'll know when to start listening to the song(I hope) The Last Goodbye by Tamani R. Green 10:13 a.m. The cancer was back. She didn't want to tell him. It would break his heart. Hell, it was already breaking her heart. The oncologist gave her the dire prediction that she had one or two months left. Tops. It was a brutal blow. So, Scully decided that she was not going down without a fight. She tried every experimental drug and treatment they could come up with. She really didn't look any different, but she was tired all the time. The work load was catching up with her. Mulder, bless him, was totally oblivious. He was so caught up in his quest that he hadn't noticed how run down Scully actually was. They chased down the mysteries of the universe with just as much vigor as before. They were in the office. He sat at the desk, writing up a report to give to Skinner. It was due in an hour. Usually that job fell to Scully. But for some reason, Mulder decided to do it. She sat in the chair in front of his desk watching him covertly. He had those sexy, sexy glasses on. *Damn. I've never seen anybody who looks so good in glasses.* She thought. *He looks really good today. Me, I look like the angel of death today. Pale and pasty.* Scully wore a black suit that did nothing but highlight how pale she really was. She looked sick. The weight was dropping off because of the treatments. *Thank God I haven't begun to lose my hair.* But it was losing its usual luster. The nosebleeds had started again.* If I have a nosebleed in front of him, the jig is up.* " Hey, Scully." She was recalled from her reverie. " Hmm? I'm sorry, I wasn't listening." " I asked if you had anything to add to the report." " No," She took it from him and scanned it. " It looks like you have everything in order." " Ok. Let's go." They went up to Skinner's office. Mulder did most of the talking. Scully sat there, feeling a burning sensation begin in the back of her nose. Her sinuses were filling up. It was a familiar sensation, but this time, her head was pounding along with it. *Oh, God. I've got to get out of here before the blood starts running down my face.* " Sir, Mulder, would you excuse me for a minute?" " Can't it wait, Agent Scully?" " No, it can't." * Geez, I sound like a third grader who's gotta go to the bathroom.* " Scully?" Mulder was looking at her strangely. " I really have to leave." She got out of the chair like a shot and headed for the door. She didn't get as far as that. She collapsed. To the two men, it seemed as though her fall was in slow motion. Mulder and Skinner were at her side in a heartbeat. Mulder turned her over so that he could look at her. Her face was covered in blood. <*Shit.* A nosebleed.> "Scully? Open your eyes for me, ok? Can you do that for me, please?" " I'll call an ambulance, Mulder." Skinner was already dialing when Mulder nodded his assent. " Scully, wake up for me, ok? Scully, baby, hold on." Her eyes remained shut. The paramedics came and they her loaded onto a gurney. Mulder rode with her to D.C. General. The medics tried to get her to regain consciousness. He decided to try again. " Scully, wake up." Mulder's voice took on an authoritative tone. " Scully, I'm telling you. Open your eyes. Dana! This is Fox, open your eyes." Her head lolled on the stretcher and she opened her eyes to look at him. Mulder smiled at her. " It's going to be ok. Just don't go to sleep on me again, you got me, G-Woman?" She gave him a small smile. He grabbed her hand and held it until the doctors in the emergency room made him wait outside. ..."She'll be tired all the time. Shortness of breath, dizziness. That's why I've decided on complete bed rest. She's opted to fight this until the end. But I don't think that it'll extend her life any further." Mulder looked away and Maggie, whom he had called after Scully was admitted, began to cry. " I'm sorry that I have to tell you like this - " " Does she know?" Mulder asked the doctor. " Mr. Mulder, she's known for a month. I've talked to her oncologist and he says that she's been in treatment for almost as long. Are you saying she didn't tell you?" " No, she didn't." Before the resident could respond, his pager went off. " I have to go and see about a patient. If there's anything..." " That's ok. Thank you." The doctor left. Mulder went into her room. She was asleep. He looked, *really* looked at her. (Jeez. I'm an asshole. Look at her. She's so skinny and pale. It looks like she was ready to drop at any minute.) {She was and did, you ass.} That was one of Mulder's *other* personalities coming to surface, his conscience. (So how come I didn't notice?) {Too caught up your quest for the truth. She's put her life on line time and time again for you, and now she's paying the price for your stupidity.} (My quest became as much hers as mine.) {It was borne out of affection and respect for you. You were just too dumb to see it.} (I know, I know.) {What? What do you know? That you're a selfish bastard? She's given up everything for you. Everything she ever wanted, just to tag along after you in this chase.} (I know that I'm in love with her. Did I just really say that?) {Yep. That's the one thing that I agree with. But do you act like that with someone you love?} (No. God...I'm in love with her and I knew it all the time. She's wanted to tell me thousands of times. But I kept pushing her away. *Shit, fucking damn* Why didn't I see it?) {I think you know why.} (I do. Now what am I gonna do? She's dying. May not even last the next ten minutes.) {Be there for her, for her family. It's really the only thing you can do.} (Should I tell her?) {Maybe.} (Maybe?! You're the one with all the answers! Tell me what to do?) {Only your heart can tell you that, Mulder.} (Yeah, I haven't heard from that guy in years.) {Maybe it's time to get in touch with him again.} (Whatever.) {Oookay, whatever you say. I'm gone.} Mulder sat in the chair next to the bed and looked at her. He felt the love well up in him. His chest ached. (I guess this is my heart.) He reached out and took her hand. He stroked her palm ever so gently. She opened her eyes. Smiling at him, she reached out her other hand and ran her fingers through his hair and let her thumb drift over his eyebrow. Her hand came to rest on his cheek. He turned his head and kissed the palm and smiled at her. No words were necessary. ********** The next day, 11:21 a.m. Mulder watched as Scully went through another round of futile treatment. He understood why she did it, he just didn't like it. He knew she wouldn't go down without a fight. He wasn't there when they took her to the room. The room was for observation by budding doctors, so it had a glass ceiling. He looked down at her as she got up on the device that was going to deliver radiation into her already sickened body. He could feel the tenseness flowing out from her as if he stood in the room with her. He knocked on the glass. Everyone looked up. He blew her a kiss and smiled. she did the same and then she disappeared beneath the heavy machinery. He turned away, fighting tears. 12:56 p.m. He was waiting for her when she came back. She was ghostly pale. She looked like she ready to drop at any moment. Instead of letting the nurses put her in bed, he took her in his arms and he sat down in the chair with her. She had the shakes really bad. Mulder stroked her hair and talked to her like nothing was wrong. The nurses came with a sedative. He felt Scully tense as they slid the needle into her sensitized flesh. He held her close. She made little noises as she dreamed. Her small hand opened and closed on his shoulder. He kissed her eyes. Mulder got up and put her on the bed and left the room. It was time to lay it all on the line. 2:31 p.m. Scully, Bill and their mother were all watching television. "The Price is Right" was on. They were laughing and smiling. Mulder's respect and admiration for Scully grew ten-fold because she could still laugh and smile. He walked in and they all grew silent. Scully's expression still held a smile, as did her mother's. Bill's face grew stony and forbidden. Mulder knew Bill was about to make an ass of himself again, this time in front of his sister. "Bill, why don't we go down to the cafeteria. Neither of us has had lunch yet." Mrs. Scully said. (Thank God for Maggie.) Mulder thought. " Yeah, sure Mom." Bill cast a look at Mulder that conveyed pure loathing. Then he followed his mother out of the door. " Mulder, have you slept?" Scully asked. (Leave it to her to be concerned for me.) "No, I've been here with you most of the time." " You should get some rest." " No. Not until I tell you what I have say." She gave him that odd look she usually gave him when he was about to do something really weird. "What do you have to tell me?" He came around to the other side of the bed. She sat up and regarded him with her trademark arched eyebrow. " Well, you know, we've been partners for six years now. And I feel that we're more than that. We're friends. Am I right?" " Yes. You're my best friend. The only one I trust." " I think that there's something beyond that. Geez, I sound like an idiot." He ran his hand through his already rumpled brown hair. " No, you don't. Please, continue." " Well, I want you to have this." He pulled a small black box from him coat pocket. Mulder opened it to reveal an diamomd solitaire with two trilliant cut emeralds flanking the center stone. "It's been sitting in a safe-desposit box. It was part of the estate, you know when my father died. I should have given it to you a long time ago, but I was chicken. Here." He couldn't say anymore for fear that the tears would start flowing. He picked up her hand and slid the ring onto her finger. She looked up at him, words unspoken, but shining in her eyes. "Does this mean what I think it does?" He nodded. She smiled and looked at the ring encircling her finger. She kissed him, head-on, open-mouth. Mulder recovered from the shock and kissed her back with all the love he felt for her. Scully broke the kiss and her skinny arms wrapped themselves about his neck and pulled him close. Mulder squeezed back and they stayed there, wrapped in each other's embrace for a long while. Scully pulled back and took his face in her hands. His hands were still wrapped around her. " Fox," Oddly, he didn't mind her calling him by his given name. "I want you to go home and get some sleep." She smiled at him once more."You look like you're at death's door." He couldn't find the humor in that. " Are you sure?" "Yes. Go. I'll be ok." " Alright. I'll be back, though." He looked at her lovingly. " Fox?" She called from the bed. " Yes, Dana?" " I love you." His form stiffened in the doorway. " I know." He couldn't bring himself to answer her in kind. He was that big a chicken. He left the room and went home. 5:22 p.m. He slept restlessly, even though he was physically exhausted. He had a dream that she had come to him. Her hair was longer than he remembered it ever being. It flowed around her shoulders and down her back. She was dressed in a flowing green dress; her cupid's-bow mouth curved in a smile. He looked like he always did. He reached out to her and they danced. Not like they had before, but really danced. Eyes closed, arms wrapped around each other, breathing in each other's essence. And suddenly she was gone. He sat straight up on the couch. The phone rang. 6:03 p.m. Mulder ran down the hall of the cancer unit. The nurses and doctors on duty gave him odd looks but nobody tried to stop him. He reached the door of her room. Everyone was there. Her mother, Bill, his wife, Charles and his wife had flown in. They must have come right after he had left. Father McCue was there. He even saw Missy and Bill, sr. They stood in the rapidly fading sunlight streaming in through the blinds. When he skidded to a stop in front of the door, they all looked up at him. They parted to let him through to the bed. Her eyes were closed and he felt his heart stop in his chest. Then her eyes opened. He let out the breath he hadn't realized he had been holding in. " I waited for you." " I know. I'm here now." She used the last of her strength to sit up and he gathered her into his arms. This time, he kissed her. He tasted the saltiness of their tears on his lips. He breathed in her last breath. And the hand that rested on his shoulder dropped to the bed. The ring sparkled in the sunlight. Two days later That same ring sparkled on her hand along with a gold band in the stained glass sunlight of the church. She held a red rose in full bloom. The flower and her hair stood out in fiery contrast to the cream suit she wore. The church was full. The mass was solemn. The eulogy moving. Mulder didn't deliver it. He couldn't bring himself to do it, even though it was what she wanted. Skinner did it. Mulder sat with her mother. He held his head in his hands. A gold band gleamed on his left hand. The service was over. Everyone filed out to go to the cemetary. The mourners formed a circle around the freshly dug grave. The day was cloudy and gray. The interment was short and simple, just like she had wanted it. He dropped two roses into the grave as her coffin was lowered. A white one for purity; a red one for love. Everyone left. Her mother tried to get him to leave. He wouldn't. He sank down onto his knees and his tears mixed with the rain that began to fall.
