Back to ReviewsCivilization II: The Test of Time
(STRATEGY) MicroProse is planning to go head to head with Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri with this update of Civilization II. The new version will feature multiplayer, as well as many enhancements, both large and small scale. The most basic enhancements include graphic and interface issues. The game will be given a facelift through animated sprites, which Microprose hope will give more life to the maps. Units will move, fight and die. The maps themselves will be linked, allowing for huge areas to be conquered. You will be able to move from map to map through cuty enhancements, and some units will have a built-in ability to transport themselves from map to map. On the large-scale side, the changes are pretty significant indeed. The Test of Time will include three game types. There will be the classic CivII, as well as games based on the Midgard world from CivII: Fantastic Worlds, and a science fiction-themed galactic conquest game. What's most surprising, however, is that The Test of Time will allow you to continue your game after moving onto Alpha Centauri, maintaining both your earthling civilization and your outer space colonies with new units and technologies. As many already know, original Civ and Civ II designers Sid Meier and Brian Reynolds are currently working on their own unofficial sequel to Civ, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.
