(ROLE PLAYING) Deus Ex, the game that Ion Storm says has been kicking around their head for quite some time now, is certainly coming together. Though there wasn't enough for a full-on demo - and anyway, Eidos and ION Storm are busy promoting Dominion and Daikatana at this year's E3 - there was enough for them there to get damn excited about. Deus Exe, using the Unreal engine, looks clean, sharp, complex, and compelling. The characters are extremely life-like and the environments are rendered in almost obsessive detail. The game takes place 50 years in the future, in the real world...no monsters, no aliens. They wanted to build a place that people know about, with doors they want to open that in the real world they can't. The game sounds like it's full of intrigue, double-dealing, conspiracy, and espionage. RPG dialogue and blood- and-guts shooting are mixed into the gameplay so the title can certainly be called a hybrid shooter. There's a complex system of character augmentation so gamers can fine-tune the profile of the main characters, an object richness that Spector hopes will rival cinematic quality, and weaponry galore to reward the shooters in the crowd. The game's action takes place in various locations around the world: from Washington to New York to Paris to Tokyo to Hong Kong. The Unreal engine swings you through the Casa Blanca like a bird in flight - corridors lead to banquet rooms that lead to other corridors that lead to the building's patio and even out to the front lawn. Deus Ex is the first of a trilogy that ION hopes to complete at ION/Austin.
