X-COM: Interceptor

(STRATEGY/ACTION) MicroProse's original X-COM: UFO Defense is one of those games that always seems to pop up in those "remember the good old days" conversations that inevitably occur when a group of old-school gamers gets together. Perhaps it was the game's simple but overwhelming premise, its addicting mix of research discoveries and tactical combat, or maybe people just enjoy blowing the hell out of aliens with ridiculously overpowered weaponry. Whatever you think, you've got to appreciate just how hard it is for MicroProse to capitalize on the game's success. Without ever really understanding what it was that made the original game so popular, MicroProse released X-COM II: Terror from the Deep, which was criticized for being too much like the original, and X-COM: Apocalypse, which, although it enjoyed some critical success, was ultimately forgotten for being too different. Now, in a move that has surprised both press and fans alike, MicroProse has stepped away from the strategy genre altogether in order to produce a game that is almost completely and totally unlike anything yet seen in the series. In doing so, it may have stumbled on to what players have been looking for all along. The new game, titled X-COM: Interceptor, takes you off of the battlefield and puts you behind the controls of a sleek spacecraft designed with only one function in mind - killing aliens. While this might seem like an overwhelming departure from the formula that made the game great, it only takes a few minutes to realize that this is an X-COM game, complete with eerie autopsies, rapid technological advancements, and loads of fighting. The guys at Microprose seem to have had a broader idea in their minds when they made this game. I for one wouldn't be surprised, if this leads to more sequels of the same type. As long as they stay interesting as Interceptor, I'd just say...."guys keep 'em coming".
