When I joined my new school at 11+ (September 1944) I

was sent off to Exmouth, where I was put into a series of billets; some of

them good and none of them bad. The last few months I was in one of the

school boarding hostels, which was definitely much more fun. BTW - there is

always a lot of emphasis on how dreadful it was to be away from Mum and

Dad. Personally I didn't find it a problem at all. I was a bit worried that

A doodlebug might get them, but I suppose I just pushed it out of my mind.
