B... Research Problems in Foreign Countries

European countries differ significantly from their American counterpart. You may assume that you only need to turn up at a government office and look up databases. Unfortunately, you may go there on a holiday, be refused admission to government information,etc. and waste precious travel time unless you are informed in advance. What is the solution ?  Globe Trotter's Travels will arrange "Hands-on" genealogy Tours with experienced professionals. They will help you locate family history societies, provide transportation to out of the way places, reserve accommodation at local inns and keep you informed of local holidays and regulations.  If you are interested in receiving more information , please email :

align="center">Genealogical sources in the UK

The Uk is quite rich in genealogical resources and offers helpful family societies to aid you in your search for your ancestors. The follow is a listing of some Fairs for 1999:

29 June:  Yorkshire Family History Fair. York Racecourse, York, Yorkshire

3 July:  South West Family History Fair.   Weston-Super-Mare, Avon

10 October:  North West Family History Group, Stockport, Manchester

Society of Genealogists

The Society of Genealogists offers a unique combination of research material, guidance and support for those interested in family history and the lives of earlier generations.  Their library is the foremost in the British Isles with a large collection of family histories, civil registration and census material and the widest collection of Parish Register copies in the country. They are arrnged with local histories, poll books and directories, other topographical material, and the publicatons of county records and archaeological societies.  The Society runs an extensive range of lectures and courses on specific topics designed to help improve the understanding of genealogical sources and methods.  Anyone conducting research into family history should benefit from their resources.

Who else can help trace your family tree in the UK ?

Before July, 1837, the main means of establishing where births, marriages and deaths took place is by reference to baptisms, marriages and burials in parish registers of the local church.  These records are not held by the General Register Office.  Generally, they are kept in the local county record office for the area concerned. The Phillimore Atlas and indexes of parish Registers (Phillimore) can be consulted at god reference libraries to ascertain where individual church registers are now kept.

The staff of Globe Trotter's Travels have the local "know-how" to guide interested individuals to the best resources. Contact them for advice !
