John Gutekunst coaxed his Gophers to yet another winning season in 1990. They finished just one game out of a first place tie and 6-5 overall. They ended the season in fine style, defeating Rose Bowl-bound Iowa 31-24. It would be Gutey's fourth winning team in five seasons as Gopher head coach. Still, the rug would be pulled out from under him 1991. The atmoshpere surrounding the program had been steadily losing steam since Holtz' departure, and a 2-9 finish brought an end to his tenure in Gopherland. To add excitement to the Metrodome, the school hired Jim Wacker from TCU. Wacker had compiled a noteworthy record during his long and entertaining career, and promised to bring a new brand of enthusiasm to the program. The Wacker era ran from 1992 through 1996, and while the Gophers developed some explosive passing attacks, they struggled in most other facets of the game. Although Wacker failed to produce a winning Gopher team, there were some bright moments, such as their upset victories over Wisconsin in 1993 and 1994, and an exciting win over Syracuse in 1996. Still, a 59-56 win over Purdue in 1993 would stand as the "signature game" of the Wacker era. To replace Wacker, the Gophers hired Glen Mason from Kansas. Mason vowed to return the Gophers to the type of physical, hard-nosed football that through the decades had provided the school with a sound recipe for success. It took only until his third season for the Gophers to return to their historic place among college football's elite teams. Led by fantastic strong safety Tyrone Carter, the Gophers finished 8-3 and earned a bid to play Oregon in the Sun Bowl. The highlight of 1999 was a stunning, 24-23 victory over unbeaten and #1 Penn State. Carter, meanwhile, finsihed his career as the all-time leading tackler in college football history for defensive backs and was named the winner of the Jim Thorpe Award.
