Heartstart Thurrock aims to offer ELS training to organisations and individuals in the Thurrock community via the Heartstart training course, providing essential theory and practice in :-

• general care of a casualty including procedures for obtaining help,
• dealing with an unconscious person who is breathing,
• giving rescue breathing,
• performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation,
• dealing with choking,
• dealing with serious and life threatening bleeding,
• dealing with a suspected heart attack victim.

The course is taught as a 2 hour (approximately) session to classes of approximately 6-12 people with no pre-requisite knowledge. Details such as date, time, group size and location can be arranged at the organisation's convenience. During classes we strive to provide good instructor to student and manikin to student ratios, depending on the availability of instructors and suitable transport.

There are many benefits to the Heartstart scheme, a few of which are described below.

• the use of half-torso manikins allows more kit to be transported to the venue, reducing the amount of time students spend waiting due to sharing;

• the use of video teaching aids makes the course easy to teach and highly portable, so it can be delivered at most venues as necessary;

• the short duration of the course makes it easier for both instructors and the public to find the time to attend;

• the no-charge, donation only approach means that the only serious obstacle to an organisation is to find interested attendees with a few hours spare.

So, all in all, the scheme benefits everyone as less time and resource is required from instructors and public alike. This in turn leads to more members of the public being taught ELS skills, and ultimately more people being capable of make livesaving interventions.
