Clinical Studies/Outcomes

  1. Effect of a high monounsaturated fat, very low carbohydrate diet on weight and serum lipids. Goldberg, J.M.1, O'Mara, K.1, Krembs, K.2, 1Resurrection Medical Center, Chicago, IL; 2Chicago Medical School, North Chicago, IL.
  • Purpose: To test the effect of high monounsaturated fat, very low carbohydrate (HMVLC) diet on weight and serum lipids in a 90 day trial. Goldberg,

Methods: 30 obese (BMI > 29) subjects were followed for 90 days. The HMVLC diet consisted of approximately 70% fat (50% mono), 20% protein and 10% carbohydrate, and had no caloric restriction. Subjects were selected based on normal TSH and Hemoglobin A1c. Fasting serum samples from each subject were tested at 30-day intervals for 90 days. All analyses were performed on the Hitachi 911 analyzer using reagents and calibrators from Boehringer Mannheim Corporation. LDLC was calculated using the Friedewald equation.

Results from 21/22 subjects who completed the study are summarized below. One outlier subject had 9.49 mmol/L triglycerides at day 0 and 1.76 mmol/L at 90 days. A significant fall in total cholesterol and triglycerides was observed within 30 days and remained stable throughout the remainder of the study. We observed a small but statistically insignificant fall in the LDLC. The mean HDLC level fell in the first 30 days but returned almost to baseline levels within 60 days and remained there for the remainder of the study.

Conclusions: We conclude that a HMVLC diet has a beneficial effect on the major serum lipids, especially triglycerides, and is an effective therapeutic weight loss diet. Major lipid changes were observed early in the diet and cannot be attributed to weight loss.
