Colours and Markings.
A horse's colour is that of his coat (body colour) and points (mane, tail and lower legs). His markings are the white hairs on the face and lower legs. The two most common white body markings are saddle marks - white patches under the saddle - and girth marks, which are the white patches under the girth.

The five main colours are bay, black, brown, chestnut and grey. The other colours are:-
Liver Chestnut,
Iron Grey,
Piebald,
Skewbald,
Dun,
Strawberry Roan,
Palomino
and Spotted.

The six leg markings are Coronet, Fetlock, Pastern, Heel, Sock and Stocking. There is also Ermine which is white leg markings covered with black spots. The six face markings are:-
1) Blaze - white marking from the forehead down the face to the muzzle.
2) Snip - isolated white mark between the nostrils.
3) Stripe - similar to blaze, but narrower.
4) White Face - white covers the forehead and nose in a broad band down to the muzzle.
5) Star - any white mark on the forehead.
6) Wall Eye - white or blue eye, caused by a lack of iris pigment.
