This massive draught horse is one of the biggest European cold-bloods - it is solid muscle. The Dutch Draught is a relatively modern breed from the Netherlands, dating back about 100 years. It was developed from crossing Belgian breeds - mainly the Ardennais and the Brabant - with native Netherland horses.
In 1914 the Royal Dutch Draught Horse Society formed and, in 1925, the Society laid down restrictions to keep the breed pure. Only horses with known pedigrees can go in the Stud book.
Dutch Draughts have been bred for all types of agricultural work. They can begin work when they are as young as two years old and their working lives last many years. Nowadays they are also popular for showing and breeding.
