Eleanor was the fourth child of William B. and Mary
Odeneal. She was born about 1814 in Tennessee. She is named after her Aunt
Ellen Snodgrass/McClanahan. On April 15, 1830 she married Hannibal Donaldson
in Jefferson Co., TN. A story by Homer McConkey a great grandson in law
states that, "Hannible fell in love with a Scottish Lassie by the name
of Odeneal and asked her parents for her hand in marriage. But he was turned
down because they said she was too youg, only sixteen. The couple decide
to marry anyway, so they eloped. Her father and brother followed them for
three days and finally caught up with them. But when her father found out
that they had already been legally married, he gave his blessing and returned
home."
Eleanor and family moved to Cole Co., MO about 1833-34
with her father, mother, two brothers and one sister. There may have been
more but at this time these are all that are know about for sure coming
to MO from TN.
It seems that there were no hard feelings from this
as William entrusted the care of his wife to Eleanor in his will after
his death in 1845.
Eleanor and Hannible were in Moniteau Co. MO in
the 1850 census. They had seven children and were caring for Eleanor's
mother, Mary, who was 76 years old. Hannible is listed as a farmer. Eleanor
and Hannible sold the land October 22, 1855 to Christian Hernleben.
Eleanor and Hannibal's eight children,
John is the eldest child of Eleanor and Hannibal
Donaldson and was born about 1831 in TN. He was about three years old when
his parents and materinal grandparents moved to Cole County MO. He married
Nancy P. Turner, a sister of Joseph Alfred Turner.
John is listed in Limestone Twp, Franklin Co., AR
in the 1860 census taken June 22. He is listed as J W Donaldson, 30 a potter,
wife W. P. 22, H. S. Murray 5 male (this is believed to be a son by his
wife's previous marriage, H. Donaldson 2/12 Male, W. H. Donaldson 22 male,
potter and G. W. Cranston 22, Male, potter. W. H. is most likely his brother
Henry and G. W. Cranston is most likely his future brother in law as John's
youngest sister, Lucinda, marries a George Cranston.
In the 1870 census taken July 12 he is in Denton
Co., TX
They had at least four children. Nancy may have
died in childbirth or shortly afterward since there was an unnamed son
born in May of 1880 and John was a widower. It is also possible that John
was married twice due to the birthdates of the children, or there may have
been other children that died. John was listed as a potter and a widower
with four children in the 1880 Cooke Co., TX census 8-113-28-33.
Their four children;
