The following is from "An Illustrated Historical Atlas of Greene County, MO 1876 page 43."
    "Judge Morton was born in Rutherford County, Tennessee, May the ninth 1808, the second child of John and Mary (Odennell) Morton. He was raised in Rutherford and Williamson counties, Tennessee, receiving such an education as was common in the log-cabin country schools of the period. On the twenty-first of June, 1832, he married Lucinda Hancock, of Maury County. He then went to farming in Marshall (then Bedford) county. Tennessee, and at the same time was the proprietor of a mill. In 1836 he came to Greene County, Missouri, and selected for a home the location where he has since resided. The following year he brought on his family from Tennessee. Previous to the rebellion he was extensively occupied in trading in stock. During the war, though anxious for the preservation of the Union, and desirous of averting hostilities, his sympathies were with the South. For many years he was Director of the branch at Springfield of the old Missouri State Bank, and for four years was its President. In the fall of 1874 he was elected Associate Justice of the Greene County Court and at present, occupies that position. Judge and Mrs. Morton had one child-a son-John A. Morton, who married Margaret V. Logan, and died on the the eleventh of June, 1865, leaving three children. Judge Morton has been a man of conspicuous energy and conscientious convictions, efficient and popular public official."
    This brings to question his mothers name. It had been believed that her name was Nancy Caroline nickname Polly. He states her name as Mary, which is very likely since Polly is a nickname for Mary, and it may have been Mary Caroline. His sister is Nancy Caroline. The Nancy most likely coming from John's mother who was Nancy Morton and Caroline may have come from the mother or just from the state which was common.

    John was born Dec. 18, 1833. He married Margaret V. LOGAN about 1853. John owned a grocery store before the Civil War.
    The Confiderate records list a John A. Morton, Pvt, age 28, Co A, 3rd MO Cav. He enrolled July 14, 1862 at Carrol Co.,Arkansas and was mustered in at Rolling Prairie, Carrol Co., Arkansas, Aug. 1, 1862, by Lt. Col. Campbell. His enlistment was for 3 years or the war. His horse was valued at $200.00 and horse equipment at $20.00. It was signed by J. B. Hyatt. It lists under the muster roll Aug. 1 to Dec. 31, 1862 that he deserted at Ozark, MO Sept. 9 whilst with L. H. Graves carring flag (truce). This was also signed by H. B. Hyatt. It is believed that he was in the rest of the war, so the meaning of this is not clear. There was no mention of a court martial or anything else in this service record. He died June 11, 1865. The reason for death is unknown. The War was over but he may have sustained wounds that caused his death even after the fighting.
    Margaret was left with three small children and she remarried Joseph AUMOTH by 1870. They had one daughter and by the 1880 census Margaret was a widow again.
    He is buried at Hancock/Morton/Westmoreland Cemetery which is located on his fathers farm.

    Cordelia was born Dec. 3, 1854. She married Samuel Young May 14, 1874 in Greene Co., MO. Cordelia died April 7, 1880. This information is from a family Bible owned by John Young and Greene Co., MO cemeteries. Samuel was born April 19, 1848 and died Dec. 23, 1887. It is not know at this time who cared for the two children.
    Their two children:

    Mary was born about 1877 in Grene Co., MO. Mary may have married a J. G. Davis.

    John was born about 1879 in Greene Co., MO

    Susan was born about 1855 in Greene Co., MO. On Nov. 13, 1873 she married Hiram H. WESTMORELAND. Hiram was born about 1849 in TN and was a farmer. He was deceased by the 1910 census and Susan was listed as a farmer.
    Their five children are:

    Joseph was born Nov. 1, 1876 and married Eva C. Litten. Joseph was a farmer and Eva a homemaker. They had five children by 1910 and one was deceased.

    Joseph H. Westmoreland, 67, farmer of Ash Grove community died at 10:15 O'clock last night at a Springfield Hospital following a lingering illness. He is survived by his wife Eva; two sons Robert L. And J. Austin both of Springfield; two daughters, Mrs Bell Gott of Springfield and Mrs. Howard Miller of Dixon; and three sisters, Mrs. Lulu Hopper and Mrs. Ida Gurley, both of Springfield and Mrs. Susie Normand of Brookline. Funeral services are incomplete, but will be under the direction of Herman Lohmeyer. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery.

    Eva C. Westmoreland, 86, died today at 9:30 a m at the home of a daughter, with whom she made her home, Mrs. Bell Gott, 2522 North Grant, after a lingering illness.
    A lifelong resident of Springfield, she was a member of the Dale Stret Methodist Church.
    Also surviving are another daughter, Mrs. Pauline Miller, Rolla and a son, R. L., Santa Rosa, CA; nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
    Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Greenlawn. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery.

    Austin was born about 1898. in MO.

    Belle was born about 1899 and married a Mr. Gott according to her mothers obit.

    Pauline W. Miller of St. James was born April 25, 1904 in Mountain Home, AR, and died Aug. 22, 1992 at her home in Rural St. James, at the age of 88 years.
    Prior to her retirement she worked in the nursing field. She was baptized in the Macedonia Baptist Church in Rolla, MO.
    She leaves one daughter, Paula Lindenlaub and her husband, Russell, of St. James; one son, Boyd Miller and his wife, Nancy, of Scottsdale, AZ and sixteen grandchildren.
    Preceding her in death were her parents, Joseph and Eva (Litten) Westmoreland, husband Howard B. Miller, two brothers, one sister and three sons, Myron Miller, Joseph Jenkins and Irvin Jenkins.
    The funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 24, 1992 at 8 pm in the James and Gahr Chapel with Rev. Leroy Sadler officiating. Organ music was provided by Merlee Hauck with vocal selections by Corrinne Stumpf.
    Arrangements were by the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

    Robert was born about 1908 and moved to Santa Rosa, CA between 1944 and 1967.

    Lucinda was born Feb. 21, 1879, she married Edward (Edwin) L. Hopper Nov. 17, 1897 at her fathers home by the Justice of the Peace. Lucinda went by Lulu and Edward by Ed. He was born Sept. 8, 1876 in Arkansas and was a farmer. He died May 7, 1938 and and she April 10, 1962.

    Mrs. Lulu Hopper, 83, of 519 Cherry, died at 11:45 pm Tuesday in Burge-Protestant Hospital after a lingering illness. She was a member of Dale Street Methodist Church.
    Surviving are two sons, Roland L., Route 2 Stafford and Ralph E. Route 2 Springfield; three daughters, Mrs. Faye Eshelman, 1720 East McDaniel, Mrs. Donna Johnson, Route 6 and Mrs. Louise Voeltze, Stafford; two sisters, Mrs. Susie Norman, 1460 South Jefferson, and Mrs. Ida Gurley, 1111 Mt. Vernon; seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a great great grandchild.
    Klinger is in charge of arrangements.

    Edwin (E.) (this is a mistake as his middle name was Lee), 61, of Stafford Rt 2, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at 5 O'clock, at his home. He is survived by his widow, Lucinda; three daughters, Mrs. Thomas D. Eshelman of Springfield, Mrs. Boyd D, Johnson of Willard and Mrs. L. A. Voeltz of Stafford; two sons Ralph E. And Roland L Hopper of Stafford; three half brothers, Hubert Hopper, of Springfield, Jedson of Wichita, KS and Jones L. of Fairland and a half sister, Bonnie Hopper of Stafford.
    Mr. Hopper was a member of Dale Street Methodist Church and Macbee Lodge. He lived in Stafford for 41 years. Funeral service will be in the Alma Lohmeyer Chapel at 2 O'clock Monday afternoon.
    They had six children;

    Faye was born Jan. 3, 1898 in Green Co., MO. She married Thomas D. Eshleman. She died Dec. 6, 1983 and is buried at National Cemery. Apparently they had no children. The following is her obituary.

    Services for Fae Eshleman, 85, Springfield, will be at 10:30 am Thursday at Ralph Thieme Chapel with Rev. Steve McQueen officiating. Burial will be in National Cemetery.
    Mrs. Eshleman died at 12:50 am Tuesday in Maranatha Manor following a long illness.
    A lifelong resident of Springfield, Mrs Eshleman was a member of Dale Street Methodist Church and Postal Employees Auxiliary.
    Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Louise Voeltz, Stafford and Mrs. Donna Johnson, Springfield, two brothers Ronald L. Hopper, Stafford and Ralph E. Hopper, Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
    Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 pm today.

    Donna was born Nov. 18, 1899 in Greene Co, MO. She married Boyd D. Johnson. She died April 19, 1990 in Springfield, MO.

    Hiram was born Oct. 24, 1901 and died July 20, 1903. He is buried at Hancock/Morton/Westmoreland Cemetery on his GG grandfathers farm.

    Ronald was born Jan. 28, 1904 and died Aug. 1984.

Louise Hopper Voeltz, 81, Strafford died at 11:55 am Saturday in St. John Regional Health Center, Springfield, MO.
    She was born in Greene County on May 14, 1906 and had been a lifelong resident of Grene County, having lived in Strafford most of her life. She served as City Clerk for over ten years and was a member of the Strafford United Methodist Church. She married Leonard A. Voeltz on June 30, 1932 in Springfield, and he preceded her in death in June 1984. She is survived by two daughters; Mrs. Luanna Samiec, Fort Lauderdale, FL and Mrs. Beverly Stiver, Bradenton, FL, a brother Ralph E. Hopper, Springfield; a sister Mrs. Donna Johnson, Springfield, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
    Services will be at 10:00 a m Wednesday in Strafford United Methodist Church with Revs Harold Spalding and Solomon Walter officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
    Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:30 pm Tuesday in Klinger Chapel, Springfield, MO.

    Ralph was born Sept. 24, 1908 in Greene County, MO. The following is his obit.

    Ralph Hopper, 85, Springfield, died at 3:55 pm Sunday in Mt. Vernon Park Center, after a two year illness.
    He was born in Strafford, MO and had been a lifelong resident of Greene Co., MO. Ralph was a farmer and owner of Hopper Grocery Store on East Division for 31 years. He was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.
    Survivors include his wife, Helen Hopper, a son, Don Hopper, three grandchildren, Kevin Hopper, Kristie Bigbee and Justin Hopper; and a great grandchild all of Springfield.
    Services will be at 10:30 am Wednesday in Klingner Chapel with Rev. Jim Downing officiating. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery.
    Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:00 pm today in the mortuary.
    Memorials maybe made to Oakland United Methodist Church, Rt 2, Springfield, MO 65802.

    One of these two daughter is listed as, Mrs. Ed Baker, age 25, a widow, living with her mother in the 1910 MO census, with no children. Susan (Susie) later married a Mr. Norman and Ida married a Mr. Gurley.

    Hiram is age 15, living with his mother in the 1910 Greene Co., MO census. In Greene, Co., MO probate records, Nov. 1918, Hildreth E. Westmoreland states, she is the widow of Hiram H. Westmoreland, he died in Arizona Nov. 15, 1918, his estate was $1097.26 and that she needed it to care for funeral expenses and the family, they had two children. I am sure this is the son of Hiram and Susan Westmoreland Sr. but will continue research for verifacation.
    He is buried at Hancock/Morton/Westmoreland Cemetery on his G grandfathers farm.

    Lucinda was born Aug. 1859 in Greene Co., MO. On Sept. 3, 1879 she married John M. YOUNG. John was born in June 1856 in TN and was a farmer. It is no known at this time if he and Samuel were brothers or not. One child born between 1900 and 1910 died.
    Their six children who were living in 1910 are:

    Elizabeth was born Oct. 1880 in Greene Co., MO. She married Elisha Edwin (Ed) Sewell and lived around Nashville, TN. They had one daughter, Lucinda (Lucy) Tate and two sons, Edward Granville and John Young.

    Laura was born July 1883 in Greene Co., MO. Married a Thomas Clairborne Fox.  They had seven children.

    Emma was born Sept. 13, 1886 in Greene Co., MO. Married a Mr. Stout when she was about 50 years old. She lived in Springfield. She died Jan. 12, 1973. She is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Springfield, MO.

    Mrs. Emma Stout, 86, died at 9:20 am Friday at her home, 501 Nichols, after a short illness.
    A lifelong resident of Springfield, she was a member of the National and High Church of Christ.
    Survivors are a brother George A. Young, 1020 South Ferguson, a sister Mrs. Patsy Packard, San Diego, a step son, Andrew Stout, Blue Springs, three step daughters, Mrs. Rosalie Hofman, Whittier, CA, Mrs Lois Symns, Phoenix, AZ and Mrs. Amy Voyles, Protem; and 19 step grandchildren.
    Greenlawn is in charge.

    George was born Oct. 17, 1892. The following is his obituatry from the Springfield Leader Sat. Jan 12, 1985.
    George A. Young, 92, Springfield, died Friday morning in his home after a sudden Illness.
    Mr. Young was a retired farmer and a member of West and Lincoln Church of Christ.
    Survivors include two sons; George Jr., Springfield and John M., Hutchinson, KS; a daughter, Luanna Keesee of Independence; a stepson, James Weatherwax, Willard, MO; a stepdaughter, Louise Cryderman, Aurora; a sister Patsy Packer, state of California; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Patsy was born in June 28, 1895 and married a Mr. Packard. and they lived in San Diego according to Emma's obit. She died Aug. 5, 1991. They had one daughter.

John was born in Nov. 11, 1901 in Greene Co., MO.
