MARY BUCHANAN ODENEAL

Mary was addressed as Polly in her fathers will of 1833.  She was born about 1810 in NC.  She married Richard Robert Fewell Sept. 8, 1831 in Rockingham Co., NC  It appears they moved Missouri about 1833-34. This was about  the same time as Sarah ( Mary’s sister) and Zachariah Fewell (Richard’s brother) if not at the same time.
Richard along with others went across the continent to California for the Gold Rush in the exciting days of 1849.  Failing to strike it rich they returned by way of the Isthmus of Panama.  They crossed over to the Atlantic side, took a ship only to be ship wrecked later, and finally picked up and landed at Savanna, Georgia.  They embarked again for New Orleans; took a vessel up the Mississippi River, reaching home after the lapse of many months, when hopes of his being alive were abandoned.  During the Civil War the Federal forces destroyed his hotel in Missouri.  He moved to Arkansas and the Federals destroyed his property again.  After the war he moved to Texas and passed the later part of his days we hope, happily and peaceful.  He passed away at his daughters home (Julia O. Fewell Derrough) in Cleburne, Texas.
Mary died and Richard remarried Mary C. MUCKLEROY.

R. R. FEWELL, AGE
97, DIES HERE

TOO OLD HIMSELF TO GO HE GAVE FIVE
SONS TO CONFEDERACY

    R. R. Fewell, 97, years old died early Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. N. Derrough of 713 Ira St.  The funeral was held at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon from the residence, with internment in Mount Olivet cemetery.
At the time of his death his three children, the youngest 56 years old, were with him.  They are Mrs. Betty Doolen of Corsicana, 64 years of age; C. L. Fewell 63 years of age and Mrs. Derrough of Fort Worth 56.  Several of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were present from Dallas and Corsicana.

SENT FIVE SONS TO WAR
Mr. Fewell lacked less than three years being a centenarian. He was too old to join the Confederate Army in 1861.  Instead of shouldering his rifle and marching away to the front in 1861, as his brother had done when President Madison called for volunteersto fight Great Britian in 1814, he sent five grown sons to the armies of Lee, Jackson and Johnson.  Four of those same sons have since died.
He was born in Rockingham Co., North Carolina in 1811.  He often related to his children that he lived on the Atlantic coast until the “stars fell” shortly after which he immigrated to Missouri.  It was whilehe was living in Missouri that gold was discovered in California and he joined the “forty-niners” in their dangerous tramp across the trackless plains.  He did not return from the gold fields until 1852.  At the outbreak of the Civil War Fewell refuged to Arkansas residing there until close of hostitilities, when his family moved to Texas and settled near Corsicana.
CAME HERE SIX MONTHS AGO
When he first came here, six months ago, he was very activeand apparently vigorous.  He was accustomed to doing a little work around the house for exercise, but his chief occupation during the day was reading Bible and church paper.  For the last twenty-five years of his life he did not use glasses, altho he was a constant reader.
Mr. Fewell attributed his long life to his temperate habits.  For For more than forty years prior to his death he had never touched tobacco, and never in his life did he dissipate.  He was devout member of the Methodist Church.
