
ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE IAHR LATIN AMERICAN DIVISION

The XVII Congress of the Latin American Division held in Guayaquil, Ecuador, 21-25 October 1996 was the main activity of our Division. 215 papers were presented and included in the Congress proceedings. As an example, there were 85 papers from Mexico, 38 from Colombia, 31 from Argentina, 25 from Brazil, 25 from Cuba, 19 from Venezuela, 16 from Chile, 14 from Ecuador, 11 from Spain, and some from other Latin American countries and Italy. The Congress was attended by 220 engineers and scientists, coming from practically all countries in Latin American and Spain.
Local and Government Authorities, the President of IAHR, Professor Helmut Kobus, the President of Latin American Division, Dr. Eduardo Varas, the President of the Local Organising Committee, Ing. Gabriel Cabezas, presided the Opening Session.

Lecturers from the Universidad de Cataluña and La Coruña, Universidad de Chile, CEDEX, Spain, and INCYTH, Argentina, offered short courses in 4 different cities simultaneously, attended by approximately 250 engineers, prior to the week of the Congress. Topics included urban hydrology, fluvial hydraulics and flood control, debris flow and landslides, and sprinkler and drip irrigation techniques.
During the Congress, Prof. Ing. Ciro Menéndez, Congress General Co-ordinator and vice-president of the IAHR-LAD, was elected President of the IAHR-LAD.

The 19th and 20th Latin American Congresses will take pace in Argentina and Cuba in the years 2000 and 2002, respectively. This decission was taken by the Committee during the last meeting in Guayaquil after analysing the proposals from both countries.
