The Ibis mummies found in this vast tomb are estimated to be at least 4,000,000 (some scholars even estimate the final amount to be twice this figure!)

The Ibises were reared in the nearby temple dedicated to Thoth, baboons have also been found in similar quantities there.

Due to the large numbers of mummified animals found at this site. It is thought that people who had a particular problem that required the help from Thoth, would pay for a Ibis or baboon to be killed, mummified and buried in honour of Thoth who would then answer the problem of the person with the request.
