I received your e-mail about the new chat room but will probably not be joining in. There are several such chat groups on the web that sound like they might be lots of fun. Unfortunately they (and Yours) are almost always held during the supper hour! At that time of day I am either preparing, eating or cleaning up after the evening meal - (here or at Home Town Buffet) - and therefore miss all the fun. While it would probably do me good to skip all evening meals, my husband would never go along with the idea. Happy chatting to everyone else!

My sister and I were born in Hobbs 1937 and 1940. Other brother Melvin, now deceased, also went to school in Jal.Ben C. Mattison's address is 3341 Winlow St. San Diego, CA 92105 . He has many stories of the old days. We still own the lot in Bennett where we moved from. Sure was fun visiting. Although I don't remember living there it was like "going home again". Got to see an old friend, Pat Norton Sinclair, while there. Hope the Reunion goes well. We may try to come back. Go Panthers!

I think a lot of us are scurrying around now trying to locate classmates. Some are attempts to help organize the reunion, others just because our interest is peaked thanks to this website. Whatever reason is yours, and for those that don't know, there are several ways to go about it.

I have found searches available through the AT&T site (www.att.net) that provide good results. AT&T has their own White Page listing with over 200 Million people. On the same page are other search systems titled Bigfoot, four eleven, and some others. I have had more success with Bigfoot, more so than even AT&T. Another nice thing is that you can get email addresses and initiate messages while in the search.

Of course, the more info you have (e.g., middle initials, general geographical area, etc.) the easier your search will be. Unfortunately, Brenda (Mc) Stephens and I don't have that luxury for some folks and searches have resulted in as many as 710 hits. Ugh! So we can use your help for any of the folks listed in Brenda's message for the class of '68. Thanks Tim Gregory! If anyone has any questions on the searches, I'll be glad to help if I can. Well, I finally found the site that I had heard about. I graduated from Jall in 1971. I also married a Jal (Betty Seale). We lived at Camp #4. Betty is Director of the Womens and Children Hospital at Hendricks Medical Center and I am pastor of First Baptist Church in Buffalo Gap, a bedroom community of Abilene.

Jal was a very unique place to grow up. There seems to be an attachment to everyone that lived there that is unlike most small towns. It would be interesting to discover why.

I will continue to monitor this site.

Sorry that Nell did not know who I am. I will give her a few more clues. I married the prettiest Head Cheerleader that Jal ever had. We have two daughters, both graduates of Jal High. We used to live across the street in Jal General Camp from George and Nell. ("F" Street.) Bob Erwin & I used to guail hunt with George. My youngest daughter once backed into the side of George's company car when backing out of the driveway. I played as one of Nell's out-of-town partner in the last school homecoming. We won everything. Maybe this will shed some light. I do not have an e-mail address. Gary can send a response to my grandson "Mike" Soper @ mike_soper@hotmail.com Guess again.

Just lookin' Monday, 11-May-98 15:18:01

Message: 207.66.35.89 writes:

I'm looking for some guys I used to play in a rock band with in Jal in the late 60's. If anyone knows their whereabouts, please let me know: Bill Webb, Tim Gregory, Kent Shelton, and Steve Meadows. I still write and play a lot of music, and I think it would be a real sweet deal for the original group to have a 'reunion' tour (if any of 'em remember how to play!).

Played football w/ Nell's brother when Nell's husband George was coaching in 1943. Title of message is: "A little mixed up." Just a line to say I'm living, That I'm not among the dead. But I'm getting more forgetful And more mixed up in the head. For sometimes I can't remember, When I stand at the foot of the stairs, If I must go up for something Or if I've just come from there. And before the "Frig" so often, My poor mind is filled with doubt, Have I just put food away, Or have I come to take some out. And there are times when it's dark out With my nightcap on my head, I don't know if I'm retiring Or just getting out of bed. So if it's my turn to write you, There's no need getting sore, I may think I have written And I don't want to be a bore. So remember I do love you And wish that you were here. But now its nearly mail time, So I must say "Good cheer". There I stand beside the mailbox With face very red, Instead of sending you my letter I had opened it instead-------------- I will know if Nell knows my name, If she mentions it in her Senior's News.

Nell will know.

If you guess who this is give me a call. I married the prettiest girl and cheerleader in Jal High School. It will probably take you all of ten seconds to figure this out. Lots of luck.

Jerry, just read the messages for the first time, had a great time reading them. I married Jack Cunningham '62 in 1965 and we live in Dallas. Put us on the email address list. Had lunch with Nawanda (Byers) Fuller '65 and Ginny (Johnson) '65 Brotherton in March here at my house, but didn't know about this website then. Anyway enjoyed looking through it. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to Reunion 2000. Twilla

Dear User,

In an effort to extend the individual message life beyond thirty days, this board has been converted to a monitored site. This means that when you submit a new message, you won't see it right away. I will visit this site daily to approve the new messages so that they will be transferred to the viewing screen. I hope this won't inconvenience you. We'll try this for a while to see how it works; if we don't like it, we'll go back to the old, unmonitored version.

Thanks, Jerry Phillips

Yeah, messages get deleated after 30 days, altho you might beable to set it so they're only deleated when you deleate them. I dunno, I dont remember. Go to messageboard administration and check the settings on this board if you would like messages to last longer.

Hello Fellow Jalapenos, (term borrowed from Mary Grayce Wright)

This is a request for JHS Trivia. The 'Trivia Questions' page of this website has been neglected for several months. I'd like to ask everyone's help in updating it. Please send me little known, obscure facts, etc., which can be phrased as questions. (Be sure to include the answer) Submit your trivia questions to my email address. Do not submit by using the "reply" line on this messageboard--if you do that, everyone will be able to see it.

Thanks for your help. This should prove to be a lot of fun.
