Garofalo, Janeane

Jeanane Garofalo on "The Larry Sanders Show."
(b. 1964) New Jersey-born actress/comedian/former bike messenger whose curmudgeonly riffs on pop-culture won her berths on The Larry Sanders Show (debuted1992) and Fox TV's short-lived The Ben Stiller Show (1992-93). In Stiller's sketches, she showed an uncanny talent as both acute impressionist and sharp-witted actress--skills which made her an obvious candidate for Saturday Night Live. She joined the ailing show at the start of the 1994-95 season, but took a leave of absence before the season's end, loudly criticizing the male-dominated writing and production staff.
Garofalo's ambivalence toward success and her apparent streak of self-loathing was typified by a Letterman appearance where she forcefully mocked the Generation X-slanted marketing of Reality Bites (1994), the Ben Stiller film in which she outshone nominal stars Ethan Hawke and Winona Ryder. After a flurry of activity in 1995 -she turned reporter on Michael Moore's TV Nation, hosted Comedy Product on Comedy Central, and starred with Uma Thurman in the fluffy comedy hit The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Garofalo has since kept a relatively low profile, turning in supporting and bit roles in such films The Cable Guy and Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy (both 1996), and taking a modest character part amid the muscular cast of Copland (1997). Garofalo also returned to the stand-up circuit, most notably as a charter member of the Un-Cabaret in Los Angeles, which also features fellow comedians Bobcat Goldthwaite, Dana Gould and Margaret Cho.
