Qwilleran must move. He takes KoKo with him. The cat begins to show signs of being disturbed. His former owner had been there most of the day and Qwilleran's job takes him away from the house. An acquaintance tells Qwilleran it would be a good idea to get a companion for KoKo. There is more murder on his new beat.

KoKo and YumYum thouroughly enjoy their new home (and the scraps from Maus's table). Then there is another murder.

Qwilleran wakes up in a hospital and doesn't remember his name. Even more horrible, he doesn't even remember Ko Ko and Yum Yum. The book has a flashback to show how this story begins ... Qwilleran arrives back in Pickax with Ko Ko and Yum Yum to start living the required five years in the area to claim his inheritance. Adjusting to his new status isn't easy for Qwilleran who is the quintessential Scotman with M.O.N.E.Y. After Jim and the cats move into the Klingenschoen Mansion, they (thanks to Ko Ko of course) work on finding out about the sudden departure of a young housemaid who had previously worked at the Mansion five years earlier. Suddenly, people start to die ... and Qwilleran begins to wonder if his inheritance is the root of the problem, and a possible threat to his own life.

Qwilleran and KoKo is once again on the trail of something/someone who is causing trouble in Moose County. In the meantime, one of the artists in the studio is painting Polly's portrait per Qwilleran's request. Polly seems to really have taken to the artist ...
