Sherriff Harge is retiring, but he has a case that has
haunted him for 20 years. A young woman with a reputation for
being involved with almost any man who asked, was found dead and
he was never able to prove who killed her, although he had his
suspicions. The Harbold brothers had been imprisoned for killing
a police officer during a robbery and no one else had been
interesting in proving they were guilty of killing young Patty
McCorkle. His brother is on parole when Carl Harbold escapes with
an emotionally deficit albino. Carl had made a promise to get
even with everyone responsible for his imprisonment, including
Del Rey Corbett, the Harbold's step-father. Del Rey has just
hired Jack Sawyer, a young drifter who just showed up one day
asking for a job. Jack managed to talk him into hiring him in
spite of Del Rey's distrust of strangers. Del Rey has his son's
deaf young widow and young grandson to care for and doesn't want
anymore trouble than he's already having. Why has Jack Sawyer
come to the Corbett Ranch and made himself available for work,
particularly at this time, when Corbett is avoiding a corporate
purchase of his property and the Harbolds are on the loose? The
plot is busy, but kept me interested with red herrings and plot
twists.
