This is the first of Janet Evanovich's mysteries involving a
young lady named Stephanie Plum. Stephanie is out of work, about
to be thrown out of her apartment and has her car repossessed.
During one of the family meals her Mother suggests she try to get
a clerical job with her Cousin Vinnie who runs a Bail Bond
company. Unfortunately, the clerical job is taken, but the
secretary suggests another form of work ... retrieving bail
jumpers i.e. bounty hunter. Her first assignment ... wangled by
blackmailing Vinnie ... is for Joe Morelli. Joe is an old "acquaintance"
and cop on the run. He's accused of murder, and unable to face
the prospect of going to prison to be reunited with some of his
old busts, Joe doesn't appear for court ... and Stephanie NEEDs
the money. When she gets in touch with Ranger, a top bounty
hunter and starts training she is unaware of the dangers she'll
be facing.
