Rapunzel
Reading Level: Ages 4-8
Caldecott Award Winner for 1998
This old folk tale has traced back to France and Italy. The first known printing of the tale dates to the mid 1600's. Zelinsky has combined the French, Italian and German versions and used art based on the masters of the Renaissance to illustrate this classic.
A young wife who is pregnant develops a craving for salad greens in her neighbors garden. Her husband gathers the greens for her and upon his second visit, he is caught by the owner of the garden, a sorceress. In return for the greens, the couple must relinquish their child when it is born. The Sorceress imprisons the young girl child in a tower and the only way into the tower is to climb the girls braided hair. Enchanted by the voice of the girl, a prince watches and discovers the secret of entering the tower. The sorceress later discovers the visits have taken place and cuts the girls braids. She sends Repunzel into the wilderness. The prince climbs the braids and is blinded when he falls from the tower after being greeted by the sorceress instead of Repunzel. The prince and Repunzel are eventually united and return to his palace.
