My oldest Carter ancestor is my great-grandfather, Joseph Carter. He was born in Kentucky, and migrated to Arkansas with his family as a child where he married Talitha Isabelle Dees. It was told in the family that the Carter and Dees families came to Arkansas on the same wagon train. I can't locate Joseph in the 1870 Census when he was 17 and should be home with his parents. In 1880, he and Talitha were in Johnson Co., AR, and in 1900, they were living in Newton Co., Arkansas. In 1903, he moved his family to Massard, Sebastian Co., AR. After his wife died, he moved to Hazel Valley, Washington Co., where he lived with a daughter. He is buried in the Hazel Valley Cemetery.
