AN ANALYSIS OF HERMAN HESSE´S NATAL CHART
WITH THE USE OF URANIAN ASTROLOGY TECHNIQUES

 by Parsifal

Uranian Astrology, “The astrology of tomorrow”, was founded by the German astrologer,
Alfred Witte (Hamburg: 3/2/1878- 8/4/1941). Witte´s most important teachings were the determination of the transneptunians (TNPs), the conception of the
Planetary Pictures and the sensitive points, and the use of the dials.

The TNPs:

The transneptunians, so called because when Witte “discovered” the first four of these “planets” in the 1920´s- Cupido-, Neptune was the most distant planet known, although they haven´t physical existence are very important sensible points in a natal chart. They are CUPIDO (CU), HADES (HA), ZEUS (ZE), KRONOS (KR),  APOLLON (AP), ADMETOS (AD), VULCANUS (VU), and POSEIDON (PO).

In Witte´s book “Rules for Planetary Pictures” we can find many
keywords for the meanings of the TNPs:

Cu: Family. Sociability. Societies. Associations. Collections art.

Ha: Poverty. Baseness. The deteriorating of the past. Garbage. Dirt. To hesitate. Delay.

Ze: Leadership. Direction. Irresistible force. Compulsive behaviors.

Kr: The kernel formula for everything above average. The executive       power.

Ap: Experience. Success. Glory. Peace. Trade. Commerce. Science.

Ad: First origin. Primary material. Raw material. Rotation. Circulation. Hindrance. Condensation. Cessation. Separation. Death.

Vu: Energy. Might. Force. Power.

Po: Spirit. Idea. Ideals. Light. Shining. Higher mind.

Planetary Pictures:

The Planetary Pictures (PP) used by the uranian astrologers are simmetrical pair of midpoints that share a common axis.

“A + B – C = D” is a shorthand for a planetary picture, where A/B and C/D are the two pairs of midpoints that share an axis (the line connecting the midpoint and its opposite point). The “D” position is known as the sensitive point. The definition of the planets occupying “D” describes the answer to the question as a promise of the natal chart.

The Dials:

The dials are precision instruments used to accurately measure the dynamics of the personality and to accurately forecast events. The 90º dial, for example, is used to identify planetary aspects and planetary simmetries without difficult; grouping planets by cardinal, fixed and mutable qualities. It gives to the astrologer a mighty tool to check the inner relations within the chart.

For having a brief idea of the possibilities offered by the Uranian Astrology  for speed up chart analysis and enhance the depth of a reading at its core level now we are going to use Herman Hesse´s natal chart.

Herman Hesse´s birth data:

July 2, 1877- 6:00 P.M. G.M.T., 8º E 03´ , 48º N 01´, A: 21º 18´Ge., M: 20º 30´Li.
With Sun in Cn, Moon in Pi., and Asc. in Sg., very possibly he born a few minutes later. In that case he had his M. conj.the star "Spica", his Mercury over the Desc. and trine M (partil); also Jupiter more over the A.

Radix characteristics of Herman Hesse:

Sun trine Mars - Sun in VII, and Mars working for 3rd house (remembering Robert Hand´s teachings:"...according to the Greeks the houses begin about 5 degrees prior to the cusps...", Essays on Astrology, pag. 96)

Many activity and impulse for the matters of 3rd. house (writings). Moon conj. Saturn in 3rd: Mo / Sa: self-control, care, attention, consciousness.

Another view point: Moon (the soul), Saturn (Orient). Hesse wrote a lot of
books about the "oriental soul", about the "oriental customs" (Do you remember one of his most famous books: "Siddharta"; and "Journey to the East?). Moon conj. Saturn sextil Pluto potentialize his creativity.

Pluto is ruler of 11th house: he attain his professional objectives writing.

Neptune (ruler 3rd) sextil Sun: sensibility; receptivity to all the impressions, inclination to mysticism, spiritual life and inner life experiences.

Mercury is very angular, so it works by general analogy (comunication, writings). This Mercury is ruler of 9th house: Hesse wrote about spirituality, philosophy.

Mercury semi-square Neptune (very closed): the effort for integrate the knowledge about himself with that about all the other people. For comunicate clearly, thinking and saying things of universal meaning; for being like a prophet.

With the 45º dial we can see:

Su / Mo = N.N./ Vx = N.N. / Ki = Su / Ju = Pl / Ha = Sa / M = Ve / Ju

And if we now introduce the 22º 30´dial, to that midpoint tree we can add Mars (with 19´orb to the Su / Mo).

So his most inner feelings, thinkings and ideas, all of him, his "body & soul" (Su/Mo), are projected to a lot of readers in the whole world marking an epoch (N.N./Vx): many people were compenetrated with the ideas developed in "Siddharta", "Steppen Wolf", "Demian", " The Glass Bead Game", etc., at the same time that the  "Hippie Movement" appears in our century.

This projection has a main purposse: the teaching of a way of being (N.N. / Kiron). With his writings Hesse attained fame and glory (Su/ Ju). In those days he was present in the thinking of many people - including me -.

"Everywhere on earth there are people of our kind. That for a small part of them, I can be a focal point, the nodal point in the net, is the burden and the joy of my life." (private letter, 1955)

He was awarded with the "Nobel Prize for Literature" in 1946.

The "Pluto / Hades" in Hesse´s chart means his journey into the deeper grounds of the human soul.

The plutonian work: burning himself, dying and rebirthing in his seeking for the Meaning of Life, the Meaning of God, the Meaning of the Being. The exploration for the "essence" of the things. And of course, which energy is better than that provide by Hades for potentialize the working of Pluto´s Hesse? ( I have never forgotten those words coming from Demian (in the book of the same name), explaining to Sinclair the worship of the
God “Abraxas”: the god who represents the Good and the Evil, all included). This passage of the book for me is the more clear description of the meaning of "Pluto / Hades" energy working in Hesse´s mind.

With "Sa / M" in Hesse is impossible not to consider the "C.O.S.I."´s(“The Combination of the Stellar Influences”-Reinhold Ebertin) description: a tenacious adhering to one´s objectives or aims in life. Herman Hesse was completely coherent between his thinking and his way of life. So this midpoint repeat the claims of his "Su/Mo", that we are examining now.

"Ve/Ju" is also a very highlighted presence in this author: "the joy of love, happiness in love" (C.O.S.I.): this "Ve/Ju" turn me to remember another of his works "Narcissus and Goldmund": a true and extrange love (with a bit of taste of "The Karamazov´s brothers" of Fedor Dostoievsky, but with more complex relationships).

Perhaps "Ve/Ju" here is indicative of "Free Love"). Undoubtedly "Ve/Ju" was present in Hesse´s mind when he wrote this book; allways regarding that this "Ve/Ju" is intimately connected with his "Su/ Mo".

Finally we arrive at Mars´s energy. This Mars certainly acts like a dynamo in the whole structure of Hesse´s "Su/Mo" midpoint tree. Again the “C.O.S.I.” gives perfectly the idea represented: " the urge to bring to fruition ideals and wishes". In Hesse this was the need to write all what he think about Live, Love, Peace, God, and other trascendental matters.

Sensitive points:

Now we can examine the sensitive points for being an author in Hesse´s natal chart.

First we must know that a “sensitive point” becomes important when it equals a natal, directed or transit factor (M, 0º Ar., Su, A, Mo, N.N.)-, by directed or indirected contact.

In Maria Kay Simms´s book “Dial Detective” we find the followings sensitive points for authorship:

"Su + Ne – Me” ------ "Me + Ne - Su" ----succes as author: "Su + Ap - Me".

So with the 90º dial in Hesse´s natal chart we can see:

                " Su + Ne - Me" = Pl

               " Me + Ne - Su" = N.N./ Po

               " Su + Ap - Me" = Ur

This means first of all that in Hesse, these sensitive points are occupied by a planet or a "logical" midpoint (N.N./ Po). I have for me  the fact that if  a planet is present in each of these sensitive points assist and help for the realization of what is promise by the sensitive point. In this case: Pluto is where all this energy is deposited. So is Pluto one of the planets that take the commitment of attaining the objectives stated by "Su + Ne - Me". I have no doubts that the plutonian energy is continuously flowing through the writings of Herman Hesse. The invitation to dye and rebirth in every act of one´s life. Hesse´s life was a series of crises and new beginnings. At least two times in his life, he was directly related to suicide thinkings that never went more far that only suicide ideas.

And what about Uranos, the other planet occupying another sensitive point for an author? I have for me that Hesse´s works cannot be better represented. Does you remember "The SteppenWolf", the "Tractat for a mad". Can a person like the character of "Harry Haller", trying to resolve the tension between himself and the outer world, show a more uranian way of being?

Lastly " North Node / Poseidon" taking the sensitive point "Me + Ne - Su": Look at the Wittes´s "Rules": mental connections, spiritual union. Another corroboration of all what here we have been saying concerning Hesse´s
conceptions.

Solar arc directions related to authorship in Hesse´s radix:

It´s very interesting to see this sensitive points working (calculating the directions by true solar arc for different events) in Hesse´s chart.

a) When he published his first literary success "Peter Camenzind" in 1904:

solar arc: 25º 46´ :

"Su + Ap - Me" n = Ve d. (6´)

"Me + Ne - Su" n = Me d. (32´)

b) When he was awarded with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946:

solar arc: ´66º 15´ :

" Me + Ne - Su" n = Ju d. (35´)
“ Su + Ne - Me" n = Vx d. (36´)
c) The year the book “Demian” was published (1919):

solar arc 40º 9´:

“Su + Ne – Me” n  = Me d. (3´)

“Su + Ap – Me” n  = Vx d.  (31´)

“Me + Ne – Su” d  = A n.   (19´)

d) when “Siddharta” was published (1922):

solar arc: 43º 2´

“Su + Ne – Me” n = Vx d. (6´)

“Me + Ne – Su” n = Mo d. (11´)

“Me + Ne – Su” n = M d.  (26´)

“Su + Ap – Me” d = Su/Mo n (20´)

“Me + Ne – Su” d = Eq. n. (28´)

e) the year when was published “The Steppenwolf” (1927):

solar arc: 47º 51´:
“Su + Ne – Me” n = Ur d.(8´)

“Su + Ap -  Me” d = Pl n. (20´)

“Me + Ne – Su “d = Vu n. (2´)

f) when Hesse finished “The Glass Bead Game” (Apr.29, 1942)

solar arc: 62º 11´
“Su + Ne – Me” n = Me d. (31´)

“Su + ap – Me” n = Vx d. (3´)

“Su/Mo” n = Pl d (10´)

“Me + Ne – Su” d = A n. (9´)

So, getting used to using dials and planetary pictures as a routine part of chart analysis, getting familiar with the ideas these uranian techniques suggests, will help to understand more clearly and more accurately the process of self-realization of our individual souls.
