Gifts

By Phyllis Beebe

Bring me for jewels
Ancient polished jade from the Orient;
Rough coral from a South Sea reef;
And rosy pearls to lie about my throat.

In boxes of sweet sandlewood
Bring me rich silks from India;
Fine linen from the fertile Nile;
And lustrous furs to wrap me warm.

From jars of alabaster
Pour scents of musk,
Essences of Jasmine, Spice, and Rose
Fragrant perfumes to mingle in my hair.

Or give me your love,
The promise of your faith,
Your arms to hold me fast.
These are the gifts most precious and most rare.
