Mt. Conness, big grassy ledge in rt. foreground

Scotty watching Tioga Crest from big grassy ledge
About a mile on up past Bennetville, we got to the point where to go any further would have been all walking on snow. So we climbed up the wall of the canyon onto a big grassy ledge and took a break.

view from grassy ledge:
Tioga Pk.-far left; Dana Plateau-light color to rt. of Lee Vining Canyon; Dana Peak-distance, pointy;Gaylor Peak(kinda, from back)-the entire right side of picture
It was really beautiful -- in one direction you were looking back down the canyon (see above), over the top of Fantail Lake, at Tioga Peak and Mt. Gibbs and Mt. Dana. In the other direction (see below) you were looking up toward Saddlebag Lake and Lundy Canyon and Mt. Conness.

Scotty watching Dana
On the way back we walked along the ridge that made up one side of the canyon. There were lots of wildflowers blooming, and in particular one little type of low growing pink flower that was really fragrant.

We enjoyed the day and plan to hike in the other way sometime when it isn't all snowed in.
