Collins pulls baby from crash

Saints quarterback Kerry Collins rescued an infant from a crash scene on an I-10 entrance ramp Saturday when he and a teammate were the first to arrive at the accident.

Collins and Scott Slutzker, the driver of the car, were on their way to New Orleans International Airport to catch a team plane to San Francisco. They noticed two adults and and two children had vacated the car, but a baby girl remained strapped in her car seat in the back.

"There was smoke and glass everywhere, and I asked if there was anyone else in the car, and the woman said 'Yeah, my little niece is in the back,' " Collins told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "So I went in through the driver's side. The back windshield was still intact, but it had fallen on the child.

"So I covered up my hands and lifted up the back windshield, and unhooked the safety belt and pulled the kid out. The child was fine. She wasn't crying or anything. When you're the first one on the scene, you don't know what to expect. The first thing that goes through your mind is get everybody out of the car. That's what I did."
