Rene Clemente's beautiful masterpiece, based on the book The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith, follows the life of Tom Ripley, a long time friend of Phillipe Greenleaf, who is sent to Mongibello, Italy by Phillipe's father in order to bring him back to San Francisco.  Ripley becomes too indulgent in the lifestyle of Phillipe, a wealthy man, and even envies his life.  Upon an argument onboard a yacht, Greenleaf decides to push Tom to his threshold which leads to Tom's murder of Phillipe at sea and his perfect crime scheme to fake everyone.  It's amazing how a French thriller with subtitles from 1960 can oust any American thriller in the past thirty years.  Rent this gorgeously filmed thriller before big budget actioneer thrillers.
