Setting up your web phone |
Most commonly used software to communicate with people is Microsoft Netmeeting and CoolTalk. Both of them are an Internet telephone program that lets you place a call to anywhere in the world using your computer with no charge other than the access fees for the internet service provider. All you need is a sound card, a microphone, and speakers or a headset.
To begin, you need to know how to access the telephony software. If you decided to use Microsoft Netmeeting as your choice, be sure that you have installed it when you downloaded Internet Explorer. Else you can choose CoolTalk as your choice, as the same, be sure that you have installed it when you downloaded Netscape.
Microsoft Netmeeting
The first time you used Netmeeting, the Properties box will request
some information about you, for example, your first & last name, your
email address, city, state, country and a comment. Then enter the IP (Internet
Protocol) address of the person you are calling in the Place A Call dialog
box, and click on the button with the yellow phone on it to dial. At the
moment, you will see animated fingers dialing the phone.
If
you have no idea whom to call, make a new friend, then go to the Call pull-down
menu and click on Directory to get a list of everyone who's currently online
using Netmeeting. There are 6 ULS (User Location Service) in the directory.
Choose any one and you will get the list. Clicking on any name in the Directory
and places a call to that individual.
CoolTalk
Once you have installed the program, goto the Help pull-down menu and
click on Setup Wizard. The program will guide you first through testing
your microphone and sound card, and then through program setup.
To place a
call, goto the Conference pull-down menu and click on Start. Enter the
IP address of the person you're calling in the address book and click on
OK. You can get a list of everyone currently online using CoolTalk by clicking
on the Directory tab, if no names pop up, open your Web browser and goto
Netscape's CoolTalk Phonebook (live.netscape.com) to receive an alphabetical
list of people who might want to hear from you.
CoolTalk also
includes an answering machine. If you don't take a call after a
few rings, the CoolTalk feature plays the outgoing message you've recorded,
then records a message from the calling party and saves it as an audio
file on your hard drive.
Both Netmeeting and Cooltalk let you share more than conversation. You can show your partner certain types of files and graphics, or doodle on a whiteboard on your screen and have the drawing show up on your friend's computer. If you encounter problems hearing each other, which sometimes happens when the Net gets extremely busy, you can send typed messages back and forth in real time.
