Life at College

My greatest years till date, were the years that i spent in Rajdhani College, Delhi University, between 1991-1994, pursuing BSc(Hons) in Mathematics. I remember very well, the way our seniors used to help us, during admissions. I just had to put my signature at some places, hand over the fee to them & they used to complete, the other formalities. Ofcourse all this, only when i had the necessary marks in the secondary school exams. Initially i was very impressed & also surprised by all this benovalence. Only later i discovered that all this benovalence, were due to the student union elections. Elections in our college, were more like Parliamentary elections. The students were divided into two groups ABVP (BJP's student wing) & NSUI (Congress's student wing). No other group or independents were allowed to contest the elections. There were lot of election speeches, posters, banners, beating of drums. It was lot of fun , but i must admit, studies were affected for more than a month till the elections were over. Eventually, similar to the Parliamentary elections, the candidates would not even recognize you once the event is over. Even before my college life, I had a very keen interest in Indian politics, but certainly it was greatly enhanced due to my stay in this college. Besides politics, my college was amongst the top cricket teams in the university.

The Mathematics department, had a very distinguished set of teachers. They were all the very best, in their fields of specialization. I was also very active in extra-curricular activities. I was instrumental in forming a College Maths Society & also held the posts of Vice President & President in successive years. As part of the same, we oraganized a number of quiz competitions, lectures & excursions.

Though, during the 1st year, there were about 20 students in my class, half of them dropped out after the 1st year. So for the next two years we were only 10 students, the three musketeers & sapta kanyas. The best thing about our batch, was that everyone got a 1st class in grad & all are well placed now. I  have written a few lines, about each of my nine classmates & also about some other friends of mine, whom i know right from my college days.

Sidharth

If there is one person, who is very close to me in terms of charecteristics, then it is sidharth. Like me, he has a very keen interest in Politics, Sports, very active in Extra Curricular activities & above all has ambitions & dreams similar to mine. We know each other from college days & have become kind of inseparable now. As in cricket, fast bowlers hunt in pairs, in college we both togeather used to hunt our oppenents in some, any & every event. We were always together, be it politics, sports, or making strategies to woo *****, though without any success. Starting from my college days, till the time he was in Delhi (Nov '98), we were meeting each other, almost daily. He had gone to Muscat to work is back in Delhi now. Now a days he works for www.combitcan.com in Delhi. Even now we are communicating regularly. To write about the moments that i have spent with him will amount to writing about (current year- 1991) * 365 * 24 * 60 * 60 seconds.

Hemant

Hemant is busy in his family business of silver ornaments. Recently he has ventured into gold too. Without him, our college life would have been devoid of fun, laughter & anecdotes. Here is a guy who has given us so many stories , that we can share & enjoy for years to come. The latest is that he lost 1.5 lakh rupees in a train. He says somebody ran away with it while he was sleeping. But then, he is always sleeping. I & sidharth were a NULL set without him. Last year he got married & since then, has found it difficult to meet us daily as he is used to before. The good news from his side is that he has become a proud father of a girl named Aditi on 7th September '99. My only hope is that he doesn't pass on his carelessness attribute to his kid. Otherwise no one can deny that he was the best brain in our batch.

She was the first girl, i met in my college & the only one among the girls, with whom i am in regular touch, even now. I still remember the way we used to fight over petty issues, pretend to be strangers for days & finally patch up, so as to fight again. I consider myself to be a good reader of people. But in her case i was wrong. I used to think that she is an arrogant, self centered girl, but having interacted with her for so long now, have realized that i was completely wrong. She is a very humble, down to earth & very very honest girl. I remember how efficiently & honestly she handled the funds of the Maths Society of our college. She was the Seceratary of the Society during the 2nd year of college. She is tying the knuptial knot with vivek on April 8 th '2000 & will be moving to California soon.

She was the nightingale of our class, can give Asha Bhosle a run for her money. Was also my senior in MCA, as i got selected to the course, only a year later. She was the most vocal & extrovert girl in my class. At present she works in New Jersey as an IT consultant.

She was one of the most hard working & determined girls in my class. Strangely i was both in her good & bad books during those days. Last talked to her on 24th July 1998. At that time, she was teaching computer science in a school in Delhi.

Ritu
8thMay '1974

I can never forget her as she was born on the same day as my mother, but ofcourse many years later. I met her last on 20th Dec'98 at her residence, after a gap of 4 yrs. It was a day before i left Delhi, to join Adit Bangalore. She was learning computers then. By now she must have joined some s/w company in Delhi.

She is a perfect teacher. She always used to act like one while in college. Met her last, the same day i met Ritu, 20th Dec'98, after a gap of 4 yrs. She hasn't changed even a single bit. It was good to know that she is a teacher in a govt school in Delhi. She is doing the job that best fits her.

She was the most introvert girl of my class. She is married & has a kid now. As per my knowledge, she is the only girl of my class who is married, as of now. I had been to her marriage, a couple of years back. She was doing MSc in Maths, then. Haven't heard from her after that.

Last year, I was shocked to know that she is no more. She was the youngest in our class & so had a special place amongst us. Those days she was very childish , but when i met her in PG, i was surprised to know, that she had become more concerned about her career. She stood 2nd in MSc Operations Research in the University & was doing her MPhil. She was also preparing for civil sercvices exam & infact had just cleared the Prelims when she passed away. We all would have been very happy to see her becoming a civil servant.

Rakesh

We always call him by his sirname Jaitley. He is a very wise, diplomatic & above all a witty guy. He is again very keen in Politics & sports as all my friends are. He got married last year to a girl of his choice & is working as a Marketing Mgr in a Delhi firm. In front of him even i am an introvert. He is really great in his public relations.

He was my senior in college. He comes from a place in Uttar Pradesh , India. I really appreciate his patience & determination in all walks of life. Initially, in his studies he had a lot of setbacks , the kind of which i can't even think of facing, leave alone fighting back. No body had faith in his abilities. But unlike many normal humans he was extremely determined & patient. Inspite of many handicaps he fought valiantly & successfully completed MCA. He works as a software engineer in Delhi.

He was my junior in college. He is a very good cricketer & even represented Central University, Hyderabad, while he was doing his MCA. His achievements are simply great. Currently he works as a s/w engineer in an MNC in hyderabad. Honestly speaking, i can't say that he is one of my best friends, but i do have a lot of admiration for him. That's why i have included him in this page.

He was my senior in college. He is a very good speaker & has a good knowhow of various social & cultural issues of India. If you want to have a good absorbing chat on any social/cultural issue, he is the right guy to chat with. When i last met him at Rakesh's marriage, he was working for Dabur India Ltd in Delhi.
