When Dwayne Bryant played basketball at Georgetown University in the late 1980s, CoachJohn Thompson preached 60 minutes of pressure defense. Bryant is now sharing that sermon at T.C. Williams High School, where a season ago he took over as head coach.
Led by sophomore guard Dennis Bowden, who had a game-high seven steals, the Titans forced 32 turnovers last night and defeated visitingLee, 73-60, in a Virginia AAA nondistrict matchup in Alexandria.
T.C. Williams improved to 1-1, Lee fell to 0-2.
"Ballgames are won on the defensive end. That's the bottom line," said Bryant, whose team trailed 38-31 at halftime. "No matter what level you play on, when defense gets going, offense picks up. We played better defense in the second [half] and started making some easy buckets."
Led by Bowden and senior forward Erick Sydnor, the Titans forced eight turnovers in the first four minutes of the third quarter and scored 12 unanswered points to take a 43-38 lead. The Lancers cut the lead to three on a basket by C.J. Vick (13 points), but senior guard Jamar Eubanks scored eight of the team's next 13 points to give the Titans a 56-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
"Defense is our game plan," said Bowden, who finished with 13 points and six assists. "We try to execute on offense and create turnovers on defense.....At halftime, coach told us to jump out on them and be more aggressive and that's what we tried to do."

Notes: Lee guard Val Brown, who signed a letter-of-intent to play for George Washington University, announced several days ago he will sit out until late January to concentrate on his academics....Coach Harris returned to Lee after a one-year leave of absence.
