Boys Basketball Lee's Val Brown is AP first team
RICHMOND (AP) -- Jerian Younger didn't succeed in bringing George
Washington-Danville its third Group AAA boys basketall championship in four years, but 6-foot-9 James Madison-bound center does get a nice consolation prize. Younger, a senior who had 33 points and
18 rebounds as the defending champion Eagles lost 75-66 to state runnerup South Lakes in the semifinals, is The Associated Press Group AAA boys player of the year. Joining Younger on the AP first team
is Lee senior Val Brown, who led the Lancers to the Group AAA state semifinals, where they lost to eventual championship Princess Anne, 74-66. In that game, Brown -- who will play for George Washington
University next year -- scored 35 points. For the season, the 6-1 Brown averaged 27 points and three steals for the Lancers, who made their first appearance in the state tournament since 1988.
The first team is rounded out by: junior Johnnie Story of Hampton, the only underclassman on the team; Daryl Towe of Princess Anne and Keith Willis on Norview. Younger averaged
17 points and 11 rebounds this season, helping the Eagles to a 23-5 record a year after losing state player of the year Charles Stephens and first-team selection Marques Cunningham to graduation. Story,
6-5, averaged 21.8 points and 11.8 rebounds for the Crabbers, who reached the Eastern Region semifinals before losing to Princess Anne. He scored a season-high 34 points in a victory over Warwick. Towe,
6-3, averaged 16 points, 8.7 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 3 steals for the state champions, who finished 26-3. He scored a season-high 26 points in the state champiolnship, the last on a free throw with 3.9 seconds left.
Willis, 6-5, averaged 24.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists. Gary Cason, whose Princess Anne team rallied to win in the semifinals and then hung on in the championship for
its first state title, was voted the AP's coach of the year. The Cavaliers trailed until late in the third quarter before beating Lee in the semifinals, then blew almost all of a 22-point lead in the
last eight minutes before South Lakes 71-68 for the title. The second team is David Johnson of Maury, David Fanning of Western Branch, Lane Brooks of Courtland, Eltonm Brown of Warwick and Luqman
Jaaber of George Wythe. All five are seniors. Sportswriters and broadcasters voted on the awards. |
