Acronyms and Common Terms

AIT: Advanced Individual Training, Used by the Army for Skill (Job) Training after AIT.

ALLOTMENT: Is something specified by the member to be deducted from his/her pay, for example, a bill, loan, bank account, or charity.

ASAP: As Soon As Possible.

AWOL: Absent Without Leave.

BAH: Basic Allowance for Housing, usually a set monthly rate determined by the military members pay grade.

BAS: Basic Allownce for Subsistence. Used for Food/Rations Money. Payable to the Servicemember only.

COLA: Cost of Living Allowance, used in overseas or high cost areas to supplement a military members income.

COVER: Term used by Marines and Sailors for Headgear.

DECK: Used by Sailors and Marines as a term for the ground, or marching surface.

DLA: Dislocation Allownace. Paid to married military members upon a PCS move, usually BAQ (BAH) x 2.

ETS: Expiration Term of Service, or a servicemens time to get out of the Military (Enlisted).

ESA: Expiration Service Agreement, Same as above (Officers).

HEAD: Toilet, Bathroom.

LATRINE: Toilet, Bathroom.

LES: Leave and Earnings Statement.

MIA: Missing in Action

MOS: Used by the Army to Identify a Skill (Job) Field.

OHA: Overseas Housing Allowance. Used when a member is stationed overseas to supplement BAH.

PCS: Permanent Change of Station, or moving from one place to another.

PDS: Permanent Duty Station.

POW: Prisoner of War.

ROE: Rules of Engagement. Used during a War-time situation defining a soldiers responsibilities and duties to engage the enemy.
