COMMONWEALTH  FENCING   CHAMPIONSHIPS

1998

Latest News (Please see results of final rankings further down the page) :-

Memories from the championship

22nd - Time flies and it's the last day of the Champion-
ships. New friends were made and everyone hoped to
see each other in Belfast four years on. Meanwhile
next year will see a senior CFC being held in South
Africa. England ran away with the Wilkinson
sword here with it's points. So long, all fencers
and officials who took part in the CFC. It's been
a great week of fencing. Goodbye and take care everyone.
21th - Smooth day again except for an Irish lady fencer
who hurt her elbow and the team had to withdraw
from the epee team event. The CFF congress was held
immediately after the finals and the next CFC will
       be in Belfast, N.Ireland.
20th - History made today as women's sabre makes it's
appearance in the CF Championships in the
       individual event.
19th - Another smooth sailing day. Wales and Malaysia made
a boo-boo in their men's sabre team event against
New Zealand and Scotland respectively by sending in
the wrong fencer unto the piste. Both got penalised
       by losing the match 0-45.
18th - Complains about refreeing abounds. Other than that
day two runs it's course smoothly.
17th - Competition officially declared opened by His Royal
Highness the crown prince of Selangor. Opening
ceremony started with countries marching in with
their flags followed by a salute by 12 fencers.
Competition started at 11.30am. Semi-finals started
at 6pm. Competition begins with it's first black
card being issued to an aussie lady fencer who
threw her foil unto the piste upon losing and
abused the referee with foul words.
16th - Rehearsals for opening ceremony. DT, team managers,
referees meetings, trainings etc all in full swing.
Goody bags (t-shirts/cap/towel) given out free to
each fencer. Personally, I think the fencers are
having a ball of a time here. They are allowed to
swim in the Qlympic sized pool next to the sports
       stadium.
15th - Training for all teams starts. Commonwealth medals
       arrives at airport via Fedex.
14th - 10 pistes all laid out. Weapon check control room
       opens. Kiwi officials arrived.
13th - English officials arrived.
