CAPE HATTERAS LIGHTHOUSE

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is located at Buxton, NC. It is built on a timber base of heart pine below the water level and is the tallest lighthouse in The United States, standing 208 feet above sea level. The brick tower is painted with spiral "candy cane" stripes. This light was built in 1871 to replace one finished in 1803. Probably the best-known lighthouse, it is in danger of being claimed by shore erosion.

To get there take US-158 south from Kitty Hawk to the entrance of the National Seashore. Turn off State 12 at Buxton. For more information, contact the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Route 1, Box 675, Manteo, NC 27954; (919) 473-2111 or (919) 995-4474.
