CAPE ROMAIN LIGHTHOUSE
This lighthouse is on Lighthouse Island in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. The first lighthouse was built on this site in 1827 and is still standing. The present lighthouse was built in 1858, it has a 150-foot octagonal pyramidal tower and was decommissioned in 1947.
There is nowhere to view the lighthouse from the mainland. There are ferry services that take people to Bull Island, Racoon Key and other parts of the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, but the one we talked with told us we would only be able to see the lighthouse from about 5 miles away. He also said he would run a special trip to the lighthouse but we would need a group of 20 people before he could schedule it. We asked at several places in McCellanville and we were fortunate enough to find one of the locals to take us in his private boat.
