Growing Into Maturity  Part - 2

What Does It Mean to be a Christian?

Most of the books of the New Testament are letters written to churches and individuals to keep them from being swayed by heresies and false doctrines and to build them up in their faith from spiritual infancy to spiritual maturity. Since this is such a major theme of the New Testament, we need to seriously study this subject and take it to heart.

We Are Children of God

The first thing we need to realize is that at the moment we were saved through trusting in Jesus, we became children of God, God is our heavenly Father. This is why we say that Christians are "born again," we have been reborn by the Spirit and we have received the full rights of children in God's family. We are heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ. Take a look at the following passages:
John 1:12-13 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God -- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

Romans 8:12-18 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation --but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs-- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Romans 8:29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

Ephesians 2:18-19 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household

Galatians 3:26-27, 4:4-7 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. ... God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

In English-speaking cultures, the term "father" is rather formal, so young children often use the more familiar and intimate term "daddy" (or "dada" as my toddler calls me. I love that!). In the same way, Jewish children would use the familiar and intimate term "abba" when talking to their fathers ( The Bible Knowledge Commentary by Walvoord and Zuck, p.180). The Jews considered "abba" to be too familiar to use in prayer, but notice that Jesus used it in His prayers:
Mk 14:35-36 Going a little farther, he [Jesus] fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. "Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."
Now notice that the apostle Paul tells us that we can call God "abba":
Rm 8:15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."

Ga 4:6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father."

God is our Daddy! Is this inappropriate or irreverent? Not at all! Our children call their fathers "Daddy" and yet they still must honor them (according to the 10 Commandments (Exo 20:12)), which means to show respect for (see Lev 19:3) and to obey (see Deu 21:18-21 and Ep 6:1-3), but "Abba" also is an acknowledgement of the personal, intimate relationship that Christians have with God (as we will demonstrate in Part Three).

You may be thinking that since God created everyone, then all people are children of God whether they are Christians or not. However, this is not true. God is the Creator of all people, but He is not the Father of all people. There is a vast difference. For example, God created birds but He is not their Father, as the next passage demonstrates (notice that "your heavenly Father" applies to the righteous people and not to the birds):

Mt 6:25-26 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"
God is the Creator of all animals, but He is not their Father. God is the Creator of all people but He is not the Father of all people. Those who are unsaved are all children of the devil, as the following passages prove:
Mt 6:6-8 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Mt 13:37-39 He [Jesus] answered, "The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil."

Jn 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

1Jn 3:10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.

Therefore, God is the Creator of all people and all animals, and He is the Father of all Christians. He is not like a Father to us, He is our Father.

We Must Become Mature in Christ and Not Remain As Newborn Babies

Just as our human children start off as infants and grow to maturity, the Bible makes it clear that Christians start off as spiritual infants and that we must continue to grow up into spiritual maturity:
Luke 8:14  [The parable of the sower] The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear [the message of salvation], but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

1Corinthians 3:1-3  Brothers, I [the apostle Paul] could not address you as spiritual but as worldly--mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?

Ephesians 4:11-16  It was he [the Holy Spirit] who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Hebrews 5:11-14  We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

James 1:2-5  Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

1Peter 2:1-3  Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

We are told that we must not remain as infants who are blown here and there by every wind of teaching that comes from cunning and deceitful men. Instead, we must be mature, able to distinguish good from evil. Are you familiar enough with the Truth to be able to recognize heresies, false teachings, or deceptions? If not, then you are an easy target for being deceived!

We Are Temples of the Holy Spirit

As the Bible says, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we have the Spirit of Jesus Christ dwelling within us. Jesus Himself lives in our hearts!
1Corinthians 3:16-17  Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.

1Corinthians 6:19-20  Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Romans 8:9-10  ...if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.

Romans 8:11  And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

2Corinthians 1:21-22  Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

2Corinthians 13:5   Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you --unless, of course, you fail the test?

Galatians 2:20  I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

We Are "New Creations"

So what does it mean to be reborn as children of God? It means that we are now "new creations," and that we must daily put to death our old selves and allow the Holy Spirit to renew our minds in the image of Christ (this is the process of sanctification). Notice that we have a responsibility to work with the Holy Spirit in our sanctification (renewal):
Romans 12:2  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

2Corinthians 5:17  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Ephesians 4:22-24  You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Colossians 3:3-10   For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

You are now a new creation in Christ. Therefore, put to death anything that belongs to your earthly nature, put off your old self, and put on the new self which is being renewed by the Holy Spirit in the knowledge and image of Christ. Notice that these are not mere suggestions for being a good person, these are commands given in the Bible which we are to obey!

We Are Aliens and Strangers in the World

Since Christians have been born again and have died to the old self and should be daily putting on the new self, it means that we are no longer of this world. We are aliens and strangers here, our true citizenship is now in heaven. We are ambassadors of Christ living in enemy-occupied territory   (for more on this, please see our 3 part study on Spiritual Warfare):
John 15:19  If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

John 17:15-17 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

2Corinthians 5:20  We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.

Philippians 4:20  But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ

James 4:4  You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

1Peter 1:1  Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia

1Peter 1:17  Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear.

1Peter 2:11  Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.

Since we are now citizens of heaven and not of earth we must live our lives as aliens and strangers in the world, acting as Christ's ambassadors.

We Must Surrender and Submit to God

Since we are children of God and are new creations, we must deny ourselves and surrender our lives over to God as obedient children and obey the perfect will of our Father in heaven:
Matthew 16:24  Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."

James 4:7  Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

1Peter 1:14-16  As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

1Peter 4:1-2  Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.

2Corinthians 5:7-9, 15  We live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. ... And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

Colossians 3:1  Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:17  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Is Jesus the Lord of your life? Have you submitted your will to His? Is He the Lord of the books you read, the TV shows you watch, the movies you go to? When you are considering a new job, considering looking for a new house, looking for a spouse, etc., do you seek His guidance and His plans for your life? He may want you to remain in your current job because He has plans that you can accomplish there. He may want you to purchase a house that your natural mind would never want. He may want you to serve Him in a foreign country. If you are single, He has a spouse all picked out for you who is an ideal match for you, much better than you could ever select through your natural mind (assuming that it is His will for you to be married, that is). The point is, we must put Jesus on the throne of our lives and trust in Him and quit trying to run things on our own. There's a reason that He is God and we are not! He is perfect and has perfect knowledge, perfect wisdom, perfect understanding, perfect love, and perfect timing. We will not always understand why we seem to be suffering at times or why He doesn't do things our way or in our "logical" timing, but we can trust that "in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). As we can see from the following passages, God is sovereign, He is in control, trust Him!

Acts 17:26  From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.

Hebrews 1:3  The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.

Ephesians 2:10  For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Jeremiah 1:4-5  The word of the LORD came to me, saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

John 15:5  I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Acts  17:25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.

Submitting to God means that we must obey Him, just as Jesus obeyed Him:

John 14:21-24  "Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?" Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me."

John 15:10  If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.

1Peter 3:15  But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. ["Lord" means "Master" or "Boss"]

1John 2:2-6   He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk [live and act] as Jesus did.

What does God want us to do? He wants us to be fruitful disciples, bearing fruit through good works:

John 15:1-16 I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit --fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

Acts 26:20  First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and to the Gentiles also, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds.

Romans 12:1  Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-- this is your spiritual act of worship.

1Corinthians 6:20  you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Ephesians 2:10  For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Colossians 1:9-10  For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God

Titus 1:15-16  To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

James 1:22  Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Did you know that not everyone who calls Jesus 'Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven? There are people in churches today who claim to be Christians, but by their actions they deny Him. It is not enough to say you are a Christian, it is not enough to be a member of a church, it is not enough to have great zeal for the Lord. If you claim to be a Christian but your life has not been changed and you have not yet begun to bear fruit for Christ, be aware that Jesus' half-brother James pointed out that faith without deeds is useless and dead. Can such faith save you?

Matthew 7:21  "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Luke 6:46  Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?

James 2:14-20  What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder. You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless ?

Romans 10:1  Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.

Notice also that even those who prophesy in Jesus' name, those who drive out demons in Jesus' name, and those who perform miracles in Jesus' name are not saved if Jesus does not know them, in other words if they don't have a saving relationship with Him!
Matthew 7:22-23  Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

Did you know that the Bible says we must also obey the law (i.e. human laws)?

Romans 13:1-8  Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.

1Peter 2:12-16  Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.

Titus 3:1-2  Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.

Have you reached that level of maturity where you are ready to surrender all that you are and all that you have to Jesus? That's what God asks of you, to set apart Christ as Lord of your life (1Peter 3:15) and to deny yourself (Matthew 16:24) and your earthly desires (1Peter 4:2) so that you can submit completely to God's will (James 4:7) and be holy in all you do (1Peter 1:15). Does this mean that you might somehow miss out on what life has to offer? Far from it! What you need to understand is that God wants to give you "immeasurably more than all [you can] ask or imagine" (Ephesians 3:20). You can be certain that "in all things God works for the good of those who love him" (Romans 8:28). Notice what Jesus said: "If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" (Matthew 7:11).

In other words, if you live life for your own pleasures, pursuits, and ambitions and are not allowing yourself to be led by the Spirit then you are in fact denying yourself the good and perfect gifts which come down from the Father (James 1:17). Dear friend, don't rebel against God any longer, submit to Him, surrender everything to Him, your life, your possessions, everything. Put Jesus on the throne of your life instead of trying to run things yourself. He is perfect, you are not! If you are not obeying God and being fruitful in doing Kingdom works here on earth, consider this: When you get to heaven you will be judged according to your works, you will give an account of yourself to God, and every motive of your heart will be exposed for what it is! That's quite a sobering thought! Read on...

We Will Be Judged According to Our Works

Most Christians are aware that non-Christians will be judged and punished, but did you know that Christians will be judged as well? If you are truly a Christian then you are definitely going to heaven, but when you get there you will, at some point, stand before the judgment seat of Christ to be judged according to your works:
Romans 14:10  You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat. It is written: "'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.'" So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

1Corinthians 3:6-8  I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.

1Corinthians 3:11-15  For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.

1Corinthians 4:5  Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.

2Corinthians 5:8-10  We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

1Peter 1:6-7  In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

Now that you know you will be judged by Jesus Christ and that your works and the motives of your heart will be exposed for what they truly are, it is time to stop living for yourself and to begin living each day for Jesus. As someone once said, "When your life on earth is past, only your Kingdom work will last."

We Are a Kingdom of Priests

According to the Bible, we are a royal priesthood and a kingdom of priests! The Israelites had a priestly class (the Levites), but in the Church Age the entire body of Christ is a royal priesthood and so there is no longer any need for a separate group of people to act as priests. Jesus, of course, is our great high priest:
Hebrews 4:14  Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

1Peter 2:4-5  As you come to him, the living Stone--rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him-- you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

1Peter 2:9  But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Revelation 1:4-6  John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father --to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.

Revelation 5:9-10   And they sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God"

Revelation 20:6  Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ.

We Will Reign with Christ

When Jesus returns to the earth to set up His thousand-year government, we Christians will reign with Him!
Matthew 19:27-28  Peter answered him, "We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?" Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel."

1Corinthians 6:1  If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!

2Timothy 2:11-12  Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us;

Jude 14-15  Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones [His saints, in other words, us!] to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him."

Revelation 2:26-27  To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations -- 'He will rule them with an iron scepter; he will dash them to pieces like pottery' -- just as I have received authority from my Father.

Revelation 3:21  To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.

Revelation 5:-10  ...with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.

Revelation 20:4  I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

We Are the Bride of Christ

Picture a girl who has recently become engaged to the man she loves. Can you imagine her ever being so busy with her life that she stops thinking about her fiance or her upcoming wedding? No! She would most likely be consumed with plans and preparations and dreams of her wedding and her husband-to-be. Everything else would pale in comparison, she wouldn't be able to concentrate on anything else. Did you know that the Bible says Christians are the "bride" of Christ? Take a look at these passages:
Matthew 25:1-13  At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' "Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.' "'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.' "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. "Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!' "But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.' "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

John 3:27-29  To this John [John the Baptist] replied, "A man can receive only what is given him from heaven. You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him.' The bride [the church] belongs to the bridegroom [Christ]. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.

2Corinthians 11:2-3  I [the apostle Paul] am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

Ephesians 5:25-32  Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- for we are members of his body. "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church.

Revelation 19:6-9  Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: "Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear." (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints [the church]). Then the angel said to me, "Write: 'Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!'" And he added, "These are the true words of God."

What does it mean that the church is the "bride" of Christ? It means that we Christians should live our lives "as a pure virgin" with a "sincere and pure devotion to Christ" (2Corinthians 11:2-3), and we should love our bridegroom the Lord and eagerly await His coming (1Corinthians 16:22 "If anyone does not love the Lord--a curse be on him. Come, O Lord !").
