Pavilions on Water
Why to build a pavilion or more on a bridge?
Because it rains quite a lot in some places of China. People may need some shelter outside
their homes. In old China, bridges are one of the few things built for public use. So,
when a bridge is under construction, a pavilion or more can be required to be built on it. How many pavilions are usually built on a bridge? Three. Sometimes five or only one. The quantity depends on the size of bridge and wealth of local people. A big bridge with five pavilions is really impressive. But even one pavilion is enough to offer accommodation room for passengers in a small town. What bridging technology was used? Nearly all of them are arch bridges. Some are double arch and triple arch. Multi-arches may express elegant appearance for their inverted reflection in water. Sole arch makes a big bridge magnificent like a rainbow lying over river. |
