Potter's State of the Union

1-20-2001

As the camera instantaneously relayed the gala Inauguration of George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States of America all across the land, a huge sigh of relief filled my living room ....and not necessarily because George W. Bush was being inaugurated, as much as because a certain criminal was leaving town. When I stepped outside for a smoke, I could hear the sigh of relief wasn't just coming from my own living room, either.

This essay should rightly be prefaced with the acknowledgement of this writer's personal disdain for the continuing long-time political minimalization of the tenets of freedom, liberty, and personal responsibility.

I, and (I assume) several others, have chosen to disassociate ourselves as much as is respectively possible from the manipulations of modern unconstitutional government. It must, however, be foremost and pragmatically stated that certain, not wholly peripheral effects of the current political paradigm, inevitably come to bear, ....even upon those not voluntarily participating in the de facto oligarchal structure.

Indeed, for the rest of us (at the risk of preaching to the choir) perhaps an illuminating review of history's recent lessons is unfolding at this moment, before our very eyes.

History is repeating itself!
(didn't they tell you it would?)

Not insignificantly for the second time, this country's highest political office will be held by both a father and a son. It happened a couple hundred years ago, when the Adams boys, John and John Quincy, smartly turned the trick (a study of John Quincy's ascendancy is an interesting exercise in Americana).

That the office of president was once virtually nearly monarchial is conceivable, given the context of the times and the relatively few and wealthy hands in which the government resided.

That the father-son scenario is even conceivably happening again at the dawning of the 3rd Millennium is nothing less than a concession (or a purblind denial) that plutocracy, cronyism, and influence peddling are imperturbably still alive and well in the hallowed halls of government ....in spite of the perennially premature notices of their demise given by "official" town criers.

Lest I give the impression of condemning the new President here, even 'ere the wintry breeze sternly carries away his Constitutional oath, let me welcome the new leader of the Republic with open arms and a fresh new confidence that he will faithfully honor and uphold his oath of office in the service of free citizens everywhere.

(Okay, Choir, ....if you don't want to hear this, close your ears and study your hymn books now..)

Maybe Bush will rock the cynics and vanquish the statists, reaffirming the great aspirations of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, as affirmed in The Declaration of Independence.

Maybe Bush will reaffirm the Bill of Rights, ensuring that no edict will ever again adjourn from the halls of Washington, abrogating even one more Right of any law-abiding individual for the "common good" as defined by some faceless and pernicious public office or lobby, far away–––not even "for the children!"

(Whose damned children?)

Maybe Bush will drive the moneychangers from the Temple and restore honest, constitutional currency, that even the common citizen might produce and prosper, without any benefit from license or special privilege.

Maybe Bush will affirm our more altruistic former condition of being a Union of the States, reaffirming the checks and balances designed to constrain the unjust usurpations and corruptions of power that inevitably occur with the unchecked concentration of federal control.

Maybe Bush will refresh his memory with Washington's departing words and heed his advice against debilitating foreign entanglements and alliances, bringing every last troop home from abroad, and maybe he will begin earning back our long lost respect from the nations of the world.

Maybe Bush will do all these things, swiftly and surely, the right-hand-man for the Big Kahuna, rocking the globe and bringing down all the enslaving barriers of the ages, striking mighty blows for Freedom with the terrible sword of the Lord.

I hope he does.

Only time will tell the outcome, but one thing I can tell you for certain, having been lucky enough one time to be personally set straight by the aforementioned very Big Kahuna, that Mr. George W. Bush better put up or shut up.

Having seen Him, I can understand full well the sage wisdom of not tempting God.

So, ....here's hoping our boy George doesn't have to learn the hard way. In the meantime, bone up on your Declaration and Bill of Rights.

Remember. Trust God ....and keep your powder dry!
