Elian part 3

4-22-2000

Things are happening so quickly that the first few paragraphs of this column are already outdated. I beg, however, that you might continue reading.

To many people, especially those favoring the forced reunion between Elian and his estranged father, the continuing saga of little Elian Gonzales is growing a little old. Admittedly, even to the many folks who have strong feelings regarding the hamfisted and misguided involvement of attorney general Janet Castro Reno and her so-called Justice Department minions, the continuing media circus surrounding the Elian case is also becoming somewhat wearisome.

I do believe, however, that those many of stalwart heart, still concerned with the currently unfashionable patriotic ideals of freedom and liberty, need to keep a vigilant focus on the events surrounding the case of the unfortunate young Cuban refugee––the misguided and sensationalized ubiquitous media coverage notwithstanding.

For whatever ulterior motives being served by the feeding-frenzy style of the media coverage being performed in Miami and Washington, and indeed, even Clinton's motivation to court despotism itself, it would seem that the ultimate result of it all is the inurement and desensitization of the American viewing public. Perhaps that is exactly the goal of the spin machine. I don't know.

One thing I do know is that this whole fiasco is starting to show me some unbelievable things, to wit: my own mother and my oldest friend in the world, two of the smartest and most liberty loving people I know, think nothing ill of the government's avowed position in the Elian matter.

STOP THE PRESSES! THE STORM TROOPERS HAVE STRUCK.

At 5:15 AM this morning in Miami's Little Havana, federal alphabet soup thugs in full kevlar battle regalia, wearing unworldly goggles and brandishing automatic weapons and tear gas, kicked down the doors at the modest home of Lazaro Gonzales.

The Godless gestapo storm troopers cowardly seized the terrified Cuban child from the arms of his fisherman savior at the business end of the muzzle of a fully loaded automatic assault rifle. In a nefarious and deceitful predawn blitzkrieg, Janet Castro's terror squad went so far as to cut down all communications lines in the immediate area of the raid, and the completely over-the-top military style action was sadly familiar and typical of the current criminal administration.

No self respecting American citizen with a shred of ability left within his heart to discern the difference between right and wrong, should let this latest unconscionable act of a soulless ilicit government in Washington go unaccounted for. The time for an exercise of fundamental American human rights was never more opportune or necessary, and with very little personal risk required of a dedicated citizenry, monumenal accomplishments might now be achieved.

As I sit and write these words, feeling very angry and somewhat powerless, I make a plea with my pen that all good people raise a shout for liberty now, in this once hallowed land where the whole world once looked for the eternal flame of freedom to shine brightly forever.

Get out and make some noise, people! Do you believe for one moment that official usurpers would continue to denigrate constitutional principles in the face of an adamant and decisive citizenry numbering in the millions? Do not fear these automatons, these soulless shells of what once were humans, seeking now only to preserve their priveleged positions at the public trough. This Gog and Magog would wither like chaff at the first scent of any danger to themselves.

The much recently maligned spiritual and literary co-founder of our American republic Thomas Jefferson, once said these profound words, amongst so many others:

"Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God."

Perhaps it is still not too late to learn from the lessons of history, that we might not have to fight a whole new revolutionary war all over again.

Perhaps, though, the time in the world has passed in which men yearn to live in freedom, but I cannot imagine that.

If indeed that is the case, however, they might as well just get it over with and take down the Statue of Liberty right now.
