(One note here...all these images were taken from VHD picture archive. There are lots more there, including all the really good Amano pics. The one above is actually a manga cover done by Amano.

This, as any anime fan will tell you, is a classic. Everyone has seen it...there is a reason. One of the first things you are shown is a nice action sequence of a wierd dinosaur like creature getting the top of it's head shot off. Only to have it come back and kill the horse that belonged to the girl who killed it. If that don't get you're attention nothing will.

Doris shows where Magnus Lee kissed her.
D takes out someone.

The plot starts with a farmgirl, Doris, getting bitten by Count Magnus Lee, the vampire that resides in the castle not far from the village. Not one to go out without a fight she confronts a mysterious man on the road. After showing her that he fights as good as he looks D agrees to help her. Going into town the next day Doris, her little brother and D face heavy prejudice from the villagers who fear Magnus Lee and anyone acciciated with him. After sending messengers to escort Doris, who refuses to go, Magnus Lee gets tired of waiting for his bride and kidnaps her. D has to go off to the castle and rescue her, taking out a host of strange and creepy beings. In the final face off we learn of D's heritage. We already were told before that his mother was human and his father a vampire, making him a dunpiel, and now we find out who his father was...

D looking cool.
D overlooking the vally.

One thing that bothered me a little about this movie was the strange character design. They really don't look anything like Amano's drawings. But I guess they didn't have a lot of money to work with to make them as detailed as he did. What really gets me though is the huge foreheads on the women, especally Doris. She has an enormous forehead and those funky fat braids. She really grates on my nerves. Going from all tough and mean(and really not pulling it off) to helpless damsel in distress. One minute she's all bossing D ("Surrender that sword!") and the next she's begging him to help her. Why don't she just make up her frickin' mind in the first place. Personally I would never want to be makin' D mad, he's scary. Scary and sexy all at the same time. Although in a few instances he looks a bit strange, but that's to be expected for the old animation.

The music is good, fitting. Character design is okay, story is excellent.

One last thing here. If you don't know what I'm talking about when I say "Amano" Yoshitaka Amano created this manga. You may recognize his name from Final Fantasy as well because he does all the character design for the games. He is a very talented and famous man. He also has a manga called Sandman that I am going to get.
