Self-Censoring Software
Yes, that wonderful
software touted as the answer to government censorship by all the well
meaning moguls of the political world. Is it as good as they say? Not according
to Peacefire, a student run anti-censorship
movement. Bennett Haselton,
founder of Peacefire, asserts that Solid Oak - the people who make CYBERsitter,
one of the leading censoring products on the market - lets its political
opinions shape its lists of censored sites, even going so far as to threaten
Peacefire with a lawsuit, menace its service provider, and block access
to the site itself, after it published an article opposing CYBERsitter.
This means that those families and organizations utilizing CYBERsitter
can no longer view the site. Other sites blocked are listed below.
Very helpfully, Solid Oak
do not publish or make available a list of those sites its software blocks.
Neither does it provide any means of altering those lists to parents -
it can be added to, but not taken from. Also blocked are those sites offering
information on sexuality, safe sex, gay and lesbian issues, and as previously
stated, those with political opinions which differ from those of the Solid
Oak software company.
Peacefire
Peacefire was started by Bennett
Haselton, and is a mainly student-run organization which promotes free
speech. To join is free, but for full membership you should be under 18.
Adults are given an associated membership. Was started to represent the
thoughts, feelings, and wishes of students on the net. Home of CRADLE -
the Cyber Rights And Digital Liberties Encyclopaedia.
EFF - The Electronic Frontier Foundation
EFF is the accepted centre
of free speech on the net. Home of the Blue Ribbon campaign, here is found
some of the most up to date info out there about the cause.
Its main goal is to protect privacy, free expression,
and access to public resources and information online.

REMEMBER - THE FIGHT FOR
FREE SPEECH IS YOUR BATTLE, TOO. EVERY MEMBER OF THE NET COMMUNITY WHO
REMAINS SILENT TAKES A BACK SEAT TO THE MOST IMPORTANT RISK TO OUR FREEDOM.
WILL THE GOVERNMENT STOP AT THE CENSORSHIP OF ONE MEDIUM? WILL YOU
BE ONE OF THE ONES WHO ALLOWS THE GOVERNMENT TO DICTATE OUR LIVES?
How can I help?
If you visit the peacefire
homepage, various ways of helping the cause are offered. One of which is
to join a program called PABAC (Page Authors' Benefit Against Censorship)
whereby students with knowledge of HTML, or graphics creation can offer
their services to businesses in return for donations to Peacefire and the
free speech movement. You can also promote free speech on your web page,
and increase awareness of the cause amongst your peers. Or simply keep
up to date with the situation...knowlege is power, and our knowledge will
defeat their ignorance.
