Tom Carothers of IL., has shared new information on William and Asa Mathis. He states that William and Asa were seperate individuals rather than the same person William Asa Mathis. Both Willlam and Asa are sons of Moses. If anyone has more information on this family please share with other Mathis researchers.

There are several researchers that descend from Moses Mathis that have researched this line. It is from their research that this line of Moses Mathis is shared with others.

Moses Mathis, born about 1736 VA., was the son of Ezekiel Mathis died after 01 March, 1794 in Darlington Co SC.

The Last Will & Testament of Moses Matthis:

In the name of God Amen I Moses Mathas of Darlington County in the State of South Carolina planter: being weak in body: but of and in perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament; that is to say, principally, and first of all, I give and recommend my Soul into the hands of almighty God that gave it, and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executor; nothing doubting but at the General resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Mighty Power of God, and as touching such Worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form:

First, I give and bequeath unto my son Enos Mathas two hundred acres of land whereon he now lives. Item: I give and bequeath unto my son in law Marmeduke Williams two hundred acres of land whereon he now lives. Also I give and bequeath unto my sons Enos Mathas and Marmeduke Williams jointly to them both my grist mill and one acre of land joining the said mill.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son in law Daniel Windham one hundred and thirty acres of land whereon he now lives. Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Moses Matthas my old plantation on the East side of Boggy Gully containing ninety and nine acres of land.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my son John Matthas one hundred acres of land it being part of two surveys fifty acres to be taken out of the upper part of Byrd Survey granted unto Amos Windham.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Edmond Matthas one hundred acres of land called the pond survey and also fifty acres of land out of the upper end of Byrd Survey whereon the Saw Mill stands.

Item: I give and bequeath unto Burrel Halferd and Owen Halferd each of them one hundred acres of land. Item: I give and bequeath unto my three sons namely John Moses and Edmond, all three an Equal right unto the profits of the Saw Mill.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my sons, John, Moses and Edmond Matthas, and Burrel and Owen Halferd all five whose names is now mentioned, all my house hold furniture and stocks of all kinds to be equally divided between them after my wifes decease but not before. And I do hereby constitute make and ordain the sole executors of this my last will and Testemony; Enos Matthas, John Matthas, Moses Matthas and Marmeduke Williams: utterly disallowing revoking and disannuling all and every other former Testament Wills legator bequeaths and executors by me in any wise before named. Willed and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and Testament.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty first day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Four.

Signed sealed published pronounced and declared by the said Moses Mathhas as his last will and Testament in the presence of us who in the presence of each other have herunto subscribed our names.

Enos Mathis was born about 1763. The wife of Enos was Nancy (unknown). She was born about 1770.

Enos was one of the first settlers in Hancock Co. TN., along with other families such as the Wilders, Greens, Winklers, and Trents.

Moses Mathis, the son of Enos Mathis was born 1794 in Darlington Co. SC., and died after 1850. He married Nancy Seals, daughter of William Seals and Elizabeth Hawker. She was born about 1796 in NC., and died after 1850.

Asa Mathis, son of Moses Mathis and Nancy Seals was born about 1814 in South Carolina, and died 1844

He married Mary Ann Stubblefield, daughter of Robert Stubblefield and Mary Rains. After the death of Asa the widow, Mary Ann married Enos Seals and had eight more children. She is listed as an heir in the land record of Hawkins Co. TN.

William Seals in land records for Hawkins County, TN., dated 7 August, 1844 list the heirs of Asa Mathis as;

1. Nancy Katherine Mathis, born 1841 Hawkins County, TN. Married John Drinnon.

2. William Anderson Mathis, born 22 July, 1842 Hawkins County, TN., and died 5 January, 1923 Hancock Co. TN. He married Sarah Fairchild

3. John Calvin Mathis, born 1844 Hawkins Co. TN. Died abot 1815 in Sneedville, Hancock Co. TN.

William Mathis, son of Moses was born August 1820 in KY. He married 24 September, 1840 in Clairborne Co. TN., to Susannah Husley.

William is listed on the 1850 census of Hancock Co. Kentucky, Subdivision # 33-North of Cinch River and reveals the following

It has been previously printed that this William was married to Mary Ann Anderson. Marriage records reveal that William J Mathis married Mary Ann Anderson 12 May, 1853 Franklin Co. TN. Over ten years after Asa Mathis's heirs were born.

Reuben Mathis son of Moses was born 1817 in KY., and died After 1850. He married (1) Vina Bowen and (2) Elizabeth (unknown). She was born 1828 in TN. The 1850 census states she could not read or write.

Reuben is listed on the 1850 Cenus of Hancock Co. TN., and living next door to his parents. Reuben was listed as a farmer and born in KY. William 9 born in TN and attended school within the year, Cornelius 5 born in TN, and Marshal 4 born in TN. Child of Reuben Mathis and Vina Bowen is:
William Mathis, born about 1840.
