The Dark Knight Returns
Grade:
The Dark Knight Returns. What can I say that has not already been said about this story. I admit, the first time I finished the story I was unimpressed considering this story is a classic. But then I did something that I normally don't do, I reread it the next day. I don't know why, its like I was drawn to the book. Over the years I have owned the book, I flip through this TPB probably more that any other I own, except for the Sam and Max TPB.
The book combines an unusual pacing along with unusual art, which will grow on you as the story progresses. The 4 books are essentially 4 different books, all based around a central character and theme. Then the 4 books are drawn together with a final, symbolic battle and ending. That type of pacing is risky, it either works or fails. In this case it works.
There is a lot of throw away stuff for fans to spot which really dont have anything to do with the plot, I wont list them here. But to atleast understand the story, you probably should know Green Arrow's history before he died and what Superman had to do with it, (many websites cover this) and what the relationship between Batman and Superman is. Other than that, everything you need to know is in this handy TPB, just give it a chance if you don't fall in love right away.
